Most likely an agency will hire you in as an AAE. But you could negotiate a formal review with opportunity for promotion in 3, 6 months. Something that has them agreeing to re-evaluate once you learn the ropes, assuming that’ll be a bit quicker than the average newcomer.
On whether it’s worth it, what makes you think you’ll like accounts more than media? That’s ultimately what matters, the money will come eventually.
I would take the pay cut and start at AAE. There are a lot of nuances to learn with account and your career might suffer from skipping that step. But your experience means you will be able to move up to an AE really quickly.
Your experience and skill set in media is vastly different from the day to day of Account, and because you’re so new in your career, tbh it’ll be more of a challenge to claim “translatable skills”. I think you can snag an AE role if it’s one heavy in social and digital media (you’d be at an advantage), but that’s less likely on an account that primarily works on TVCs, for example.
I think the consensus is in: you need to take a step back to take a step forward. REALLY important that you have a clear understanding of WHY you think account management would be more satisfying. I know many, many people who have made the transition and hate it. A popular complaint: “I’m not in charge of anything, yet the client holds me responsible for everything.” Also, in terms of $: it will come if you’re successful. Keep in mind that media can be as lucrative as account management these days (sometimes even more lucrative).
