The roles are different. All art directors should have a design background of some sort, however not all designers are art directors. The difference lies in overall campaign level thinking and ideation of overarching themes, not just pure visuals and craft. The overlap is likely due to companies trying to save money. There are still many agencies that separate the roles out.
People confuse the roles a lot. Whatever the reason, ADs are always asked to do more and more with less. Less time, less resources, less understanding and less patience. I keep seeing job descriptions for Art Directors where we’re expected to know every new program that comes out (I was learning Figma because of this) and the list is like 15 bullet points long, meanwhile Copywriter requirements are 5 bullet points, if that.
I got tired of this “partnership” where I was busting my a** on endless revisions and decks and my partner’s entire contribution took a day and a half. Headlines on a Google doc. I was gonna switch to copywriting to lighten my workload but was true to myself and admitted I’d be happier if I gave up being a creative professionally.
@artdirector4 yup I agree with that. A good designer can really help an AD and hurt them if they’re not that helpful. I’ve seen that pretty often
But basically yeah that’s my point on CW. What they show and what they do are 2 different things and everyone thinks they can do it too
There’s no overlapping, there’s partnering and complementing for sure. But and AD is an AD, and a Designer is a Designer.
I’ve never heard of this happening at either of the agencies I’ve been at.
I’ve almost never been at an agency where they didn’t expect an art director to deign.
AD who came from a design background here, I lament doing design work too and it reminds me why I pivoted to art direction but with how tight client budgets and timelines are it’s sort of an inevitability that ADs have to chip in. I can’t imagine how I would still be employed if I didn’t know design. I’m not really sure pure art direction work is given its time and merit in most agencies I’ve worked at.
I don’t care what they call me as long as the pay is good.
