Rising Star
No. Car culture is not gatekept by cars needing to have an ICE.
Yes they’re lame af
Car culture will evolve as it always has. Do I like EVs personally? No. That doesn’t mean other people shouldn’t get to enjoy them.
I have a pretty hardcore "enthusiast" track car (Ariel Atom 3) and my daily driver is a polestar 2. Both are great cars and they don't take away from each other.
EVs are different and that's fine. The instant torque from my polestar makes me giggle and the experience from my Ariel is unmatched, but I hate when I go to track days or autocross events hearing someone in a M340i dissing on EVs because they don't have the same "driving experience". I could argue the same about the Ariel vs your BMW but what really matters is we are all out enjoying our cars and having a great time.
Pshh, if there’s more than 1 number behind your “M” you can’t call yourself an enthusiast…
Seconding EV for daily driving. There’s no nobility in suffering with 3 pedals for bumper to bumper traffic…
We are in the second malaise era
How would EVs kill culture? It's just another car type to add to the culture. Like any car there are idiots and true car people that own them. Also there are always some cars that people like and others don't. Not a y different.... If anything the question should be directed to people that do side shows and other illegal activities that are unfairly associated by the public to car culture. That is and will kill a lot of car culture
It’s not adding its replacing. An EV Ferrari will never be my dream
I got myself a Tesla plaid - it's killed every dream I had of buying something fast. It's got such a no drama way of getting so fast I just don't care anymore. So yeah you're sorta right I think car culture is dead for me because I feel jaded.
That is an interesting take. Can't disagree... I feel largely the same with just a Model 3 Performance. I think about a lot of cars, and while there are other factors like being "cheap", I find myself saying why would I get this or that (ex. Lexus IS500, Miata, CivicR, things like that)?
I think there is a place for them (light small sports car anyone?). Car culture alive and well. It will evolve as others here have pointed out. Room for the new school of mechanical computer hackers to do some magic.
Wholesale mandating them immediately is not the answer & cause of the concern… but it won’t happen quickly.
I just switched to an EV and I love it. The tech is so futuristic compared to ICE. It’s also fun to drive.
I was hesitant for a while but now that I made the switch I don’t think I will ever go back in time.
Get back to us in a month when going fast with zero emotion in a straight line gets old.
Yes.
Teslas were just banned from my autocross club because newbies kept showing up in them and destroying everyone. Seasoned autocrossers in M3’s with $10k of mods just can’t compete with entry level EVs
EVs will only get exciting once the customer is allowed to take full ownership of the vehicle. This includes the software. Paying that much for something that as of right now you don't fully own and have to buy a recurring subscription otherwise they turn your car off is beyond stupid. Won't change my opinion on that either. They are only popular now because they are a huge virtual signal that you are compliant with totalianarism and a tool. How much carbon did you destroy today while charging your net zero car that has to be charged by a coal or natural gas electric plant?
Let's not get into just how every production ev has the lines that look was more stunning on the cochroach it was modeled to look like.
Just my opinion ymmv. But it won't get very far. Something like maxed out at about 160 miles isn't it?
No one in car culture even thinks about EVs at all
More dollars than sense
Only of you think the Prius killed car culture. Most EVs are just the new economy commuter car.
Car culture has never been about most cars, which EVs will clearly be most cars. It’s about the unique driving cars, the unnecessary cars. When Ferrari starts making EVs, that worries me.
