It depends on the event. Going to industry events can be great, you get to meet people and socialize for business. But if something is billed as a networking event, it's probably not that useful. The real networking, the kind that will do you some good, just happens organically by meeting people in the industry and staying in touch.
Noted! Thank you!!
It might be. I've been to some that were networking gold, but I also spent a decent amount of time researching what companies would be there and I knew before going into it who I wanted to try to make connections with. If I didn't have some strategy behind it, then probably not.
How do you tell the difference between the bad and good types?
I don't go unless the company is paying for it. You can network for free online now so why would I spend money? Unless there's some major perk like a speaker you're really interested in, I don't think it's worth paying.
Good to know!

I cover many of my events by joining and volunteering to work at the events. You get access to people and programming. Volunteering also makes a good impression. It shows your work ethic, which helps with recommendations and networking.
Yeah!
I think there all different types of networking events. I go to a monthly tech happy hour in my town on my own, but I can’t justify and bigger conference and travel that isn’t aligned with my leadership. That’s considering I work for a Fortune 500. This might be a different answer if you are a freelancer or work for a small startup.
Interesting! Thanks!
