For now, at yellow/ASC band, your path doesn’t matter. There will always be a path to partner at the Firm, but as things are now, you will probably need to switch paths at the AP level or earlier (EM is best). If you can develop + maintain 1-2 client homes, a strong diversified network of 5+ sponsors 2-3 levels above your current band (e.g., AP/P if you are yellow/ASC), and consistently strong utilization (e.g., you typically have multiple leaders seeking to staff you when you are rolling off a study) then you’re well set-up for a switch to integrative after making EM. Avoid CD roles and focus on full-time staffing.
The Firm removed pathways to Partner for one of the two expert tracks, knowledge consulting, and asset/solution leadership. They created a terminal Distinguished Expert role, which is not up or out, but below pay/benefits of Partner. Very hard to obtain with very unrealistic KPIs for most colleagues on those paths. It will probably change again in 1-2 years depending on Firm economics and client needs, but I would avoid those paths and suggest moving to integrative at EM.
It gets harder to switch later. You want to be at the core of early CSTs before large 1-2 year transformations and get out before they start winding down. Focus on working with APs/Partners that will pound the table for you + have strong growing platforms that seem spread thin because of how busy they are confirming lots of new engagements.
When you say "it will change in 1-2 years", do you already see positive signs about demand/margins?
Yes.
So you’re saying there’s no promotion potential at all? How does up or out work for these roles then?
