If you’re at a boutique M&A shop how do you not do merger models? Not trying to be a dick, just trying to figure out what you do at work
Do breaking into Wall Street. Obviously the more familiar you are the better. They’re not actually that hard if you make sure you can explain in layman’s terms how the different parts relate to each other. Takes practice but very possible to master them and boost your candidacy
Yep. In lower MM M&A the actual model is significantly less important than both parties arguing about multiples and what constitutes working capital.
Although the only offers I've actually received we're from other boutiques so take that with a grain of salt
I haven’t been staffed on public deals yet, just a lot of cap raises and private sell sides
Got it. You’re not going to be asked to go into excel during the interview process, so if you want to lateral into an EB or BB you’ll be fine. You’ll be more disadvantaged interviewing for PE where you need to do case studies which have a time limit
I'm in the same boat as you. My firm doesn't do much modeling but I've gotten superdays at MM firms think (PJC, RBC, Jefferies). As long as you know how it works and you have good industry knowledge you should be good to go.
^ he might mean a random tiny shop as opposed to Evercore though
I'm at a boutique that does equity raises for LMM companies . Or were you talking to OP
I was referring to OP who specifically mentioned boutique M&A. I understand it’s probably not an EB, but even if it’s a tiny shop I would still expect there to be a decent amount of merger model experience if you’re at a M&A boutique
You don't really do merger models for small private to private companies though... Operating models sure
