As a first-generation pre-law student, I often find myself browsing the LinkedIn profiles of accomplished attorneys/J.D. Candidates to gauge the path they took. It dawned on me that it may be awkward, from their perspective, for an unknown person to have viewed their profile. I might be overthinking this… I would appreciate any words of guidance for navigating networking as a pre-law student. Thank you! ☺️😅

Don’t overthink it. I used to do it when I was in your shoes and now I’m a “successful” attorney (at least on paper)

This is reassuring, thank you!! ✍️

I suggest changing your Visibility/Profile Viewing Options to “Private Mode.” Unless you have a reason to communicate to them that you are viewing their profile (like recruiters sometimes do), law industry standard is viewing in private mode.

Will do— thank you! ☺️

I've never thought about anything but positive thoughts when I've noticed a student looking at my profile.

Thank you— I’ll assume most people have the same outlook and fire on! 😅

I usually creep back, gives me a minute of distraction

Haha, I see! 😅

Try taking the next step and reach out. Successful people love nothing more than talking about themselves and how they became successful!

I have started doing this— got a few connections in the past couple days! Thank you so very much. :)

I don't know anyone attorney that has the time or cares to look at who is looking at their LinkedIn profile.

like

I do. :)

It's not only not awkward, it's expected. There are many seasoned lawyers that actively mentor newer lawyers so don't worry about it. I think your strategy is a great one.

Thank you, I truly appreciate the feedback. :)

They won’t see your name if your visibility settings are set to private. Problem solved.

Tips for bankruptcy associates who eventually want to move in-house? 3rd year associate in bankruptcy/restructuring group doing mainly bk lit but a few deals too. I have a business idea in the VR/AR space utilizing AI. However, I lack skill sets to evaluate viability or to create an MVP. Neither do I have a network to tap into.

My plan is taking classes to deepen my knowledge while joining and actively participating in communities to find collaborators.

Does this approach make sense or do you recommend other approaches? If it makes sense, do you have any recommendations for classes or communities?

Look forward to hearing your experiences and wisdom!

What’s the best way to turn down a 2nd interview? During the 1st interview, I learned that the compensation for the role is not within the range that I am looking for and requires 400 more billable hours a year than what I bill now. I’d basically be laterally for my current salary just to bill 400 more hours. I also wasn’t aware that the local office was strictly ID. Firm website advertises lots of practice areas. Any advice? TIA!

I'm in a litigation, about 9 months in. Is it normal that I spend majority of my time making bundles for my partners (printing, binding, moving docs in a different order whenever there are new documents or he wants to add stuff) reviewing documents and making tables (e.g. dates, which documents are from where), and the only legal work is like notices of admission, list of documents, the occasional research?
