As a junior, is it frowned upon to take a Friday evening off for your birthday when a deal is semi-busy?

Yes, it’s more than frowned upon, it’s cause for termination. We don’t celebrate birthdays or any other events in this profession.

Unless it’s a closing or a true fire drill, I have a standing calendar hold for Friday evenings starting at 6:30 PM lol

…why aren’t u arranging coverage?

like

Only if you say it’s for your birthday.

Why are you celebrating your birthday at all? Go back to work.

Is this all worth it guys? Haha. “But boss it’s my birthday, please?”

like

Just give notice you’ll be out of pocket if it’s anticipated to be busy and don’t do it every Friday. Everyone deserves a special occasion once in a while

like

More context

The key here is hyper communication. I’d have no issue giving a junior the Friday night off provided (i) deal isn’t actually signing/closing or the junior finds adequate coverage and (ii) the junior gives plenty of notice.

You’ve hopefully now done this, but if you haven’t, tomorrow is too late.

Happy Birthday! Capitalism and the legal field are so toxic. I hope you get to enjoy the crap out of your birthday!!!

“Capitalism and the law are toxic,” says the person likely making more money for less work than any of their family members in the entire history of their lineage

Dude enjoy your life. I promise the work will be there when you get back

Did you get to celebrate your birthday?

Just celebrate on Saturday. I haven’t celebrated a weekday birthday in 10 years.

I’m not naive or fresh out of law school, but I’m at a point where I’m saying to myself “Why can’t I have it all?” I’ve been offered a job for more pay and less hours and I keep thinking to myself, what’s the catch? I know people will say no promotion potential or that’s not how it works…but what if it could? What if you make yourself valuable by still setting your boundaries? Why would we resent someone who has that opportunity?

I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.
