I feel this so much. I was laid off for 2 years, 5 weeks to be exact and freelance opportunities were rare. Thankfully i landed a new job in September. Just know that there’s a light at the end. You just have to keep plugging along and tap your network for help. Wishing you luck.
Client-side brand manager. I see tons of listings. Decent pay. Easy work, compared to agency life.
Start with your hobbies and interests. What do you know A LOT about that equally excites you? It could be anything like chess, cooking, fitness, sports, online gambling, hiking... Now take what you excel and look at jobs in those fields that match your skill set
Leo, do it now if you can. It only gets harder…
I am so sorry you’re in this position. There are so many transferable skills- relationship management, organization, financial management, etc. Make use of ChatGPT for some ideas as you enter all those skills into there to brainstorm ideas about other areas, anything you may need to up-skill and so on. How are you making money now? Sometimes there’s careers that can be built in the places we wouldn’t think to work (e.g Costco, etc) where you’re getting a lot of benefits and some pay. With the way advertising is, the gig shuffle (working many jobs) while not ideal gives you 1) other transferrable skills 2) builds your network and value with many other people 3) can create that unlikely connection or epiphany of what you could do. Property Management, Home Sales, etc. 🤞 Good luck
Great and companioned answer.
If you want to get back in to advertising, take a freelance gig. No one will hire you if you aren’t working. What side were you? Account or creative? I agree with Producer 1. When I studied advertising they made us research what our backup career would be once we are forced out of advertising. Mine was programming which has been devastated by AI. But I know others that became artists, carpenters, poets, sculptures. I may make some video games as that at least requires some creative input for now.
I’m impressed an ad school told you that. It’s hard to retire from agency life. You typically age out, especially now with AI.
Customer success managers in tech (although these jobs are hard to come by to and require some sales) business analysts, product owners could be potential paths. Project management if you did that as a part of your role/roles in the past. I applied to all of those when I was laid off two ago.

Sorry to hear this. I feel like AS is a transferable skill since it is about management and people. Key seems to be having a story in place, like maybe a kind of educational certificate, that you are doing to mention during interviews. Could interview for both advertising and outside at the same time
Try to learn a new skill like SEO, offer your services on Fiverr to build a portfolio. This should open so many doors
There's lots of positions open on the vendor side for account managers. Account is one of those positions that always has openings
Yeah I’m not moving to America
