For the love of god - it’s not a “financial” decision. It’s just spending money. You don’t buy luxury things bc they are investment or anything like that. It’s a lifestyle choice. Life is far more that boiling everything down to a financial calculation unless you literally cannot afford the basics.
If buying that watch sinks you - you deserve it. If you’re choosing between luxury goods, then go for it. If you’d rather invest it simply bc you like to - do it.
Live a little. Or not. Buy one. Or don’t. You don’t sound like you’re struggling. I have similar net worth and a watch is low on my list bc I want to renovate, get some new suits, and add principal payments on my house.
But if all that was not an issue, and you wanted to think about it financially, the calculus on buying a 10k watch for me would be based on my % of take home income. You’re at McK, so unless you’re a senior partner with a 7 figure salary my guess is a 10k watch is anywhere between 3-10% of your take home. Thats a lot imo for something you can’t drive lol
You mean how the market is doing? Or why would I make extras principal payments on a mortgage with 7% interest cuz the latter is obvious. Also, I was talking as a general rule before buying a watch silly goose.
My smartest & favorite boss had an interesting POV. If you're on a high income trajectory, the odds are that your marginal happiness of spending money per dollar is higher now than it will be in the future. Don't make decisions that will ruin your future, and maximize stupidly obvious returns like 401k matches, but beyond that blast your cash
Just don’t be the analyst with a 100k net worth rocking a 10k watch and you’ll be ok
Agree on that too m1, I’ve just see it play weird in office politics.
I bought mine when I got a new job with > $250k salary. It's not a net worth decision for me, because it's not an investment vehicle. So it's more about how much disposable income I have in my budget for things like luxury consumables, eating out, shopping, vacations. It's a part of my regular budget.
Treat yaself, don't cheat yaself is always motto.
Buying luxury stuff, going on fancy vacations, are not good financial decisions. However, I do think you want to live a little and enjoy life also, but do it when you feel you have the financial freedom. I didn’t feel comfortable buying a $10k+ watch until my NW was north of $6M.
Haha…not only do I touch grass, I cut grass too!
Btw, a lot of my net worth was built the last 5 yrs as my career took off and solid investment returns.
Like $50k

Scrolled way too much to reach the right answer
Lmao A2 you getting riled up over your own lack of comprehension. Anything impacting money is a financial decision. Buying coffee or eating out everyday is arguably also a bad financial decision. No one said “investment” ffs. Learn to read
Buddy who even are you 😂😂 big talk being anon even though you can’t read
If you're questioning a $10k then it's not for you. Everyone has their own benchmark of luxury spend. If it makes one happy, then do it. If a timex or Casio does the job, then so be it. If driving a Honda meets your standard of transportation, then you do you. I make money to spend/enjoy the fruits of my labor and invest accordingly. Good to have that balance and responsibility. My toys makes me happy so that's most important, can't take it with me (no kids).

It’s an emotional decision not a financial one

I think I had just hit $1m within the past year or so (this was back in 2014).
I’m in the camp that buying a first Rolex, so long as you’re in reasonably good shape financially, can be a fantastic and life changing decision. Though you have to understand that 99% of other people will not care. So you have to buy it primarily for yourself, and secondarily to move the needle with the 1% that do care (and avoid the bad actors out there that care for the wrong reasons).
Bought mine with maybe 200k net worth… and it was my second watch (after a 4.5k piece). Was and am on a good trajectory, so it was a great decision. I now have 5 watches, 2 of which are 10k+. My net worth is not even a million.
$8M and don’t have a watch over $5k yet
Love it, congrats!!

$2.5M and no watch over $8500 yet. Ready to break the $10k mark but there's not much that interests me at that price point.
Negative a shit ton 😅 I had just come out of a law suit where the lawyers made a ton of $$ off of me. I had also been jobless for 5 months that year, and I was doing a house renovation that had gone way over budget. But I’m happy I did and I wish I would have done it sooner. I love my watch and wear it everywhere. Man, if it could tell stories that would be wild. If the time feels right, then do it. It’s just money. It comes and goes. If you really focus on net worth then you will never buy it because you could use that $$ to make more $$. One of my good friends still rocks a Timex because he would rather invest than buy luxury goods. He said he would get something nice at $2mil, and now he is well over $5mil and still can’t stop investing.
lol
What color is your Bugatti?
My luxury watch has doubled in value since I bought it several years ago and I wear it pretty much daily.
