At what point do we acknowledge that the career ladder is disappearing on the creative side and recognize that we are just trying to hold onto any job at all?

Do we even bother to ask for annual raises or promotions? Or do we make as little noise as possible, take on as much work as feasible and hope that we make it through the first few rounds of layoffs?
