Depends upon the T2 or ask Bain to match Atleast signing bonus
IMO would pick Bain: Faster progression, brand name and probably better exit options. You ll make up the salary difference in less than 2 years for sure
Strategy& and Maybe maybe OW. In the beginning part of your career I would still pick Bain.
If you were higher up, might have considered the T2
I wasn’t in the exact same spot as you, but I took a similarly sized pay cut to go from a T2 to Bain. I think it depends on a couple of things like what your goals are, your life situation, how many YOE, etc. but overall, I’d recommend Bain (especially if you’re still at the beginning of your career).
In the grand scheme of things, 1 year of “setback” doesn’t mean much and is worth the brand, network and experience boost of Bain.
As much as i liked to say that MBB and T2 is the same, they’re different categories.
Also, in comp considerations, if you’re not looking to leave right away, make sure to include profit sharing and retirement contributions as well.
It really depends, but <5 years I feel like you’re still at the “building a foundation stage”.
Even then, it can be annoying to think about where you would have been at a T2. By the time I hit SAC here, I likely would’ve just made manager at my old firm. It sucks thinking about that, but I think the long term benefits made it worth it. I can totally see someone making a different decision though.
This feels odd to me. Honestly the SAC role is much higher pressure. You are typically managing at least 1 AC, and generally are going for the direct promotion to consultant in 12 months or leaving to go to business school. Meanwhile C1s come in as individual contributors and are expected to learn their first year. Financially, I would still do Bain, as you could direct promote to consultant and be making more money by year 2, plus the work exposure and experience will be much better. But I think the big question to talk with your recruiter about (and you can be very frank here) is what the pathway is and whether they would expect you to stick around and direct promote and what that looks like from a timeline / requirements perspective. I imagine they wouldn't want to hire for just a one-year stint, but the direct promotion point is an up or out event as far as I know
Senior associate at BCG is exclusively a lateral hire position and for a very small number (<5%) of associates who aren’t directly promoted and don’t want to leave
Coming in as SAC will likely be very tough, candidly
If you plan to have a career, choose Bain. If you are looking for a job for a few years, take T2. Bain will buy you way more options. This is a sort of marshmallow test.
That's a pretty big gap. I'd follow the money if Bain won't match; there's nothing that special/unique about the experience you get at Bain
The performance bar is higher and feedback is a lot pre rigorous. It results in better learning and development at the cost of stress and insecurity. At K, my feedback was almost always “awesome, keep doing what you’re doing”. That being said, average hours worked per week are lower at Bain.
I also genuinely liked my time at K and think sometimes if it was worth the jump because it was a high paying job that was, relatively speaking, low stress.
Travel accommodations are the same (standard stuff). Expensing is a bit more generous at K. But that is IMO a superficial benefit.
Go Bain but make sure you’re eligible for direct promote (early direct if ready) as well as the option for MBA sponsorship (just to have). Then you’ll get the responsibility of managing full workstreams and a direct report or two, adjustment period, and staffing bump of being an SAC (vs new C1) with the promise of making C1 salary in 6-12 months after
If US that is
Yup, that makes a lot of sense. Thanks for clarifying!
100% choose Bain
I would just add that the culture and company’s activities is something to consider as well. I know, you may think all consulting firms are same etc, but it’s not the case at all.
And on a related note, WLBA / sustainability. At the end of the day, consulting is consulting but I’d say Bain is better on this dimension than most T2s (as someone who started at a T2).
