There is very little WLB at the AP level at McK. The clock also starts ticking right away for you to move up or out. Your per diem rate will be very large, which makes you unattractive to add to the project. So you will battle that while trying to hit fairly aggressive utilization targets. All in all, it’s a pretty brutal life. Decent money, but you’ll earn every penny.
Coach
Coming in as AP sounds rough. You essentially have ~2-3 years to demonstrate that you can make Partner whilst having no network at the start, before you get the boot.
Interesting too that you have more McK respondents than BCG. Could be that McK ppl are more friendly and engaged. Also could be that more McK ppl are on the “exit opportunities” bowl…
Echo to M1. Joining MBB at this level is tough, success rate is rather low based on my observation within BCG
Mentor
At this level the only q you should be asking is what place has highest odds to partner. You should be grilling both places to figure out what will be your infrastructure and what will be your network to be promoted.
Pure outside view, AP at McK tends to have higher promotion rates to Partner.
If not obvious, both changes are going to be brutal as you are going to walk in with seniority and no network or trust or experience, it will be a challenging 12 months at the minimum.
You'll see more differences between offices/practice areas than between the companies - where would you be applying? My 2c is McK still has the prestige edge in most places but BCG tends to have better WLB.
NYO is pretty intense relative to our southern offices. Southern office have that southern hospitality;). Your studies will have ppl from all over though
Both are tough, I would recommend wherever you have a little bit of network. I made a switch as AP from Big4 and it was not easy
I would consider coming in as an EM and spend 2 extra years building network of supporters and learning how things operate - improves long term chances
I agree with all the points mentioned above.Cultural difference between BCG and McK is huge. McK folks aren’t compensated based on the business they bring. If your profile and skills are more focused on selling then your chances of succeeding in McK are lower.
Believe it or not, there is no single criteria or answer. It’s a combination of how unique your story is, what is your potential to create sustainable impact at clients and make the firm grow (in capabilities and next line of leaders). There are ample cases where we elected partners with relatively lower utilizations and did not elect partners with high utilizations (so mere selling and utilization doesn’t guarantee success here).
