Be honest—do you trust your company's maternity leave policy? I’ve seen too many companies talk about being family-friendly, only for women to return from maternity leave and get sidelined. A friend of mine came back after 12 weeks, only to find half her responsibilities reassigned, and she was told it was “for her own good.” It makes me wonder—do you actually trust your company’s maternity leave policies? Have you seen them support women returning to work, or do they just check the box and move on?

Nope. Maternity leave in finance is a career risk, full stop. Too many firms see it as an inconvenience, not a necessity. I’ve seen talented women return only to get demoted, given “less demanding” work, or left out of major projects. Until taking maternity leave doesn’t feel like pressing pause on your career, I’ll believe it when I see it.

I do. My boss had two babies and took full advantage of her maternity leave. She came back with her roles and responsibilities unchanged. She even got promoted last year.

I’ve taken two maternity leaves in my current role. Felt extremely supported through my pregnancies, and supported on my return. Have continued progressing and receiving raises/upward movement throughout.

From experience, this very much depends on the company but also your direct management and how supportive they are. At my previous workplace, I did feel sidelined so I left. I was honest about this and made sure to try and pick somewhere that was more understanding but truthfully, it was mainly the manager rather than the overall company. If they leave, it may not be a good place to stay but for now it works well for me. They are so much more supportive and I actually feel valued despite taking extended leave.

Yes, I’ve used it. 12 weeks paid leave and when I got back was promoted to Branch Manager. If you have the felling then probably need to find a different company.
