Been acting as de-facto PM for a couple years without the title or formal training, in B2B info space. Recently moved into an official PM role after my old team was disbanded. I’ve got hands-on experience but lack textbook PM knowledge. My new boss is very “by the book” and sticks strictly to frameworks, which clashes with how I (and many teams) prefer to work. I learn best by doing. Any advice on how to navigate this and quickly get up to speed to meet him in the middle?

If I was in your shoes, I would focus on understanding the frameworks my manager preferred and prioritize becoming an expert in those frameworks. In addition, I would read "Escaping the Build Trap" by Melissa Perri. This is one of the best books to learn how to think and execute like a rockstar Product Manager.

Finally, I would encourage you to not fight against your manager. They are a larger force than you and most likely will win the fight. Go along with your manager. Do things in a way that make your manager look good. So if they prefer doing things by the book, you also do things by the book.

Let’s talk about wrongful termination. The other day I was fired in the middle of the day without any warning. My colleagues called me because they were confused on why the Talent Manager dismissed me from the chat. I didn’t know what they were referring to. So I called my PM to ask what was happening, and she said that she just got off the phone with the TM and said they were terminating my contract on the spot due to me speaking up about micromanaging. No explanation just kicked out. Advice?
