Dont fly - take the bolt or greyhount - its pretty decent.
The train is also a decent option but wont be cheap.
I do the Bolt bus and get one of the seats that can be reserved. It’s generally fine, but take rush hour traffic into consideration in both cities when you pick your departure time.
Amtrak regional is cheaper than Acela and about 20-30 min longer. Go off peak times if you can

This is my advice, as well. My family is in Boston and I used to take the bus, but trains are worth it and there are good prices available if you’re flexible or book early enough.
If you buy Amtrak 2+ weeks out it’s significantly cheaper
I take the bus from NYC to Providence sometimes and it’s brutal because it’s ALWAYS late and you ALWAYS sit in traffic. Only when I’ve waited too long and Amtrak has gone up from $36 to $136 or something ridiculous 🙄

It’s not as bad as you’re imagining. I haven’t done budget buses per se, but they’re FINE.
What about Megabus?
+1 on that. Reasonable price, and people don’t act crazy. Took it many times from NYC to Boston and DC. Just get there on time because that’s when the bus leaves, NOT when they start boarding. Learned that lesson the hard way 😬
I always took Amtrak. If you want to save money, take the regional. I’m not a bus person, and the extra few bucks for the train is worth it. It is such a short trip I would never fly. And it’s easier to get off at Back Bay or South Station than dealing with the airport.
Damn it looks like Bolt Bus is out of the question: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-boltbus-finished-greyhound-20210702-zdkmfqbxdbdwtdeihbvw7v74ra-story.html%3foutputType=amp

Flixbus is the best
I take OurBus to Philly when I need to and have done the same / greyhound to Boston as well. Similar service if you choose a bus. Traffic is the wildcard as mentioned
