I'm done getting paid 1/3 of the class teacher pay and expected to teach the lessons. The other Paras in the class seem to think this is normal. I certainly don't get the same respect as the teacher. Am I alone here?

You’re not alone. I work for a private school and they don’t hire teacher subs. Assistants are expected to sub for teachers for zero compensation. We are told all the time that die to licensure, we cannot teach new material. Haha. Sure. Happens ALL the time.

Definitely not alone. When I was working at a Preschool for several years, I was doing all the work with the kids, while the teacher was at her desk or on the phone. Yet, we aren’t supposed to be at the IEP’s, even though we know more of what goes on with the students. When working at middle & high school, it’s different. We are not at all welcomed in the classroom with the student(s) we were assigned to work with & definitely treated poorly. Not utilized, treated like we don’t know anything, & unappreciated when we offer to help in various ways. Some classes I stand up the whole period because the teacher doesn’t even provide a chair for staff to sit in. Almost everyday I go the whole day without one person saying “Hi” to me. It’s makes me feel worthless & it’s annoying that people can’t respect others.

I have a direct report who is smart, passionate about her job and can be really innovative. However she carries this enormous weight of responsibility, for needing to do everything, do it right, make sure it's perfect, not trusting colleagues to help. It creates dread and panic and overwhelming workload and a terrible attitude for her and I am speaking with her this week to start to shift her mindset. Any tips in navigating how to let go of this heavy idea of "responsibility"?

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.

This is twice now in back to back weeks my boss has asked me where the disconnect was in our communications because I didn’t deliver on what “was asked”, even though I know damn well what was asked and what was done were the same thing. I’m not sure if he’s changing the meaning or isn’t communicating what he’s envisioning or what but it’s embarrassing to be called out like that, and to have people think you’re the dumb 23 year old.

Am I particularly uptight, or is writing meant to be done alone, without a partner talking to you? With past partners, we chat through script notes and then I go off to execute. Current partner likes to sit and chat as I write. To me, writing is crafting a conversation. So I can’t talk to you and simultaneously talk to this audience. Of course I can just say “I’m gonna go write.” But since we’re both CD level, I’m like…is this his first rodeo? Maybe other writers are different though.

Have you seen women wear ties and "masculine"-looking suits to work? Was it accepted by client and team? I've never worn a tie to work, but when I've worn clothing that had a more "masculine" fit either in grad school or some work environments, I've gotten comments and looks, or sometimes asked (or people gossiped) about my orientation. When I wear more "feminine"-looking clothing, I feel more more uncomfortable and awkward. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hello anyone still post here?

Good morning. This is my 20th year as a AA Para. I have missed my students so much! However, I am a little nervous to return. I know I will protect myself, and I already constantly clean, but my k-3 babies will not wear a mask. I usually get a really bad cold at beginning of school year because of new germs. Anyone else a little nervous? Any suggestions?

Going back to in-person learning has been quite a challenge. We have 4 in-person and 8 virtual. The 4 in-person have done as well as to be expected, however their behaviors have been less than desired. One is being considered for going back to virtual due to behaviors. It's next to impossible to expect them to keep masks on and when they do, they're usually nasty or wet. I have PPEs but things do happen in the spur of the moment and it's hard to stop and put on gloves and such.

Hello! I am 1:1 ParaPro for a 7th grader. We’ve been together for 6 years now. Any other 1:1?
