Clerking is good, but the most important things are to get actual practice experience - depositions, stand up time, things like that. Look for pro bono matters and crank up the practical experience to 1000.
Some, but not all, AUSA offices hire youngish because they dont want to retrain you. And by youngish, I mean year 5 or so.
Getting introductions is always good - you can get an idea of what they look for. But I don't think you can "network" your way in
Networking never hurts, especially because then when you apply, you’ll actually know what they do every day (absolutely shocking how many applicants seem to have no idea what each office/role does).
Bottom line: talk to the people in the office where you want to work and as many people as you can. Only caveat is if you have a terrible personality, then probably don’t let them get to know you before you apply.
Confirming that you do not need to clerk. Do you want to do civil or criminal?
Honestly unsure at this juncture. I’m open to both. I suppose I’m leaning civil but at this point I’m just trying to learn about all the options and what those would mean for my career.
