In finance, not IBD. Don’t be afraid to switch companies and speak up for what you want. I try not to get involved in office politics either. Tbh, I’ve accepted that I’m not the “favorite” within my group and I’m never going to be, so I don’t think about that anymore as long as I continue to get paid what’s fair (this can be validated by keeping open lines of communication with industry folks including peers, recruiters and hiring managers). I am the only black person on my immediate team and only one of 3 black people total out of 100+ in the same job function. I like my manager and get along with my team but I’m not at my job to make friends, I’m there to make money. The sooner that I accepted certain things that I couldn’t change, and once I started speaking up for myself (this happened early on) the happier I became.
It was hard to get in the door, but once I got my first job offer in the finance industry, it's been uphill from there. I make sure to not shrink myself around non-black colleagues and show them that I deserve to be there as much as them.
I am at the $300k mark and it's had its and downs. I've been in finance for 10+ years now. I started before social media brought to light the complications of being black in corporate and I faced a lot of microagressions. Over the past 5 years, my experience has been better and racism has not affected my success in this field. I am happy but look forward into moving into something else.

This is good! $300k in Ops? I need to connect and learn how it started … it’s been a slow grind for me but wondering if it’s because I’m Black and Female
Does strategy count? I know nothing about finance, just our business and products.
Anyway, I'm at $200 now, 10 YOE. I was at $74 in 2018.
Biggest change was leaving consulting and finding a manager that believed in me, for me. Confidence plus learning how to add value to the bigger picture of the work your team does has sent me toward the moon.
I'm not there yet, but the 🚀 is en route.
This is really good to know. Thank you for sharing this.
From 60k pre MBA to 500k in hedge fund. I went to an M7 business school for an MBA.
Definitely following this one, interested in the career path of y'all especially. And if you aren't happy at least you're unhappy with 100k+ lmao.
I'm still behind paywise...but this thread is giving me good motivation. I just don't know how to advocate for myself I've realized
