Wanted to highlight Prudential Financial’s hiring practices. They rescinded my offer once I attempted to negotiate the salary. The official reason given was that I didn’t “sound excited enough”.
They then admittedly gave the offer to someone who was less qualified. There were other red flags throughout the job offer process that the HR team should overall be ashamed of.

Notice is not required in the USA when leaving "employee at will" positions; the same rules that allows companies to fire you at any time without notice or reason also gives you the ability to quit at any time without giving notice. It is a common curtesy to give 2 weeks, and your boss can ASK for more, but they cannot demand you stay.
The only exception is if you have a contract that stipulates otherwise.
Tell your boss you are leaving in a week. If he insists you to stay longer, offer to work as a consultant at a generous hourly rate.
(Companies hypocrites when it comes to employment laws. They like the "Employee at Will" law because it gives them most of the power... but then they complain about people job-hopping and quitting without notice, things that are a direct result of those laws.)
Most legit companies in the US also expect to wait at least 2 weeks for their new hires. It's a red flag to me that this new job is not willing to do so....but that's just me with over 20 years in the professional workforce. Two weeks notice is enough to not burn a bridge unless your contract or the on-board paperwork you signed says differently.
Yes you can. Obviously two weeks is preferred but not mandatory. You are doing them a favor by staying not the other way around. At the end of the day you need to do what is best for you OP.
Unless your contract says otherwise, you can give 0 hours notice in the USA (well most states anyways, can't say for every state)
Give None. Send email on Monday after the last Friday YOU want to work. Company can lay you off with no notice. If they want 3 weeks notice, talk to the union.
Boy, I used to think you akways left 2 weeks notice when quitting a job. Now after seeing dozens of hard working dedicated employees let go with no notice, no consideration of extra pay and one time they even disputed his claim to unemployment (which the company lost). I advise everyone that if you know you wont need that company in the futrure to possibly be your employer again then just quit. They will not give you a “2 weeks notice “
Where do you work so I can avoid them?
You don't have to unless you are a contractor and have signed something to that effect. Otherwise, its customary to give 2 weeks if possible. If it's not possible, then you don't. You can "resign effective immediately " if you choose. Generally, they would probably mark you as "not rehirable" but that's all that would happen.
It's a nice thing to do, but, on the other hand, most bosses don't give employees 1-2 weeks notice when they are terminated so it's really your call. If you think it will affect your new job, just tell them "I'm sorry, I'll do what I can to transition my work over but such and such will be my last day."
They cannot request that from you and besides... companies do not give you 2 or 3 weeks warning before firing you, so why should you?
IMO they can lay you off at any time, with no notice in this country so you can leave at any time. Keep a copy of you notice, send it directly to HR if your manager refuses to acknowledge it. keep contact details of individuals you worked with who would make good refrences.
When a new employer contacts an old employer they can only legally if you were fired, quit, or laid off. If your manager refuses to acknowlege it, use the HR rep you sent to notice to as a point of contact for a new employer.
Your job is most likely an “at will” employment in US and does not require more than an “I quit”, however they can cause problems with you getting last paycheck. Just tell your manager no that your start date is Monday and you can’t, if they continue to tell you that you need to work extra time you can do 1 of 2 things 1) get HR involved OR 2) tell them (if your willing) you could continue working after hours as a contractor for those 2 additional weeks at 3-5x your hourly rate. The later is a good way to get them to back down but if they are seriously desparate they will do it.
I gave one week notice to a job once, generally speaking you don't need to give any weeks notice... But it's considered customary and courteous to give at least two weeks. I gave one company the option of a 3 weeks notice if they needed it.
Whatever is on your offer letter or any other contracts you signed holds up. Manager can say whatever they want but check the paperwork you signed
.
How do you want to leave things with this employer? The new company "can't wait" means they need you now, but I doubt they'd hire someone else just because you wanted to be courteous to the employer you are leaving. If they expected you to treat someone else discourteously, ....
