Can you actually make it to the C-suite as a quiet behind-the-scenes marketer? I’m supposed to attend a massive industry conference next week, and the thought of working the room makes me want to fake a 24-hour flu. I’m great at strategy and execution, but the personal branding and the constant small talk is absolutely draining.

This is a business that’s tough for introverts. I’ve watched some very mediocre colleagues rise to the C-suite based primarily on their unflagging energy, constant touting of their “brand,” and an uncanny ability to play politics and ingratiate themselves to those above. I’m not an introvert but focusing on my clients’ brands, not my own, and having disdain for sycophancy has limited my ceiling.

I think it’s possible in the right situation, but someone would have to be your voice I think. Not impossible! I’m the same way.

Its not about working the entire room, its about making the impression on the right people in that room.

How did it go? Were you able to make some traction?

Is it possible to be a “silent” investor (party A) with a friend who’s an accredited investor (party B)investing in a company? I have billed 4+ hours today helping a partner prepare a 10 slide PowerPoint for a board meeting tomorrow. Let’s say half of the time was fixing spacing and formatting. I really don’t care as I am billing all of it, but am I wrong in thinking this is unjustifiably too common and a waste of time?

Home office preference question. I am getting ready to redo the layout of my home office. One option I'm considering would have my desk facing a wall. I am wondering if anyone with this current setup has any feedback about it. I would face the wall so that I would have a better background for video conferences (am on about half the day) and also my cord situation would be cleaner.

I’ve been ghosted after every final interview during my recent job search, but never had I been ghosted before even having the first call??

Hi! I started at a new company 2 months ago and while I’m really enjoying my job so far, I’m having a hard time gauging whether or not I’m doing a “good job.” My role seems to be always evolving, which is fine and I actually enjoy being a support to the greater marketing team, but I feel like I need better defined targets to make sure I’m meeting expectations. Also, when I ask my boss what they’d like to see, I don’t ever get a clear answer. (Cont’d in comments)

Have a big interview tomorrow. The question I dread the most is about why you’re looking for a new job. The honest answer is that there isn’t enough work to go around at my agency and I want to get ahead of the inevitable layoffs. What’s the best way to tell them this? Do I just make something else up entirely?
