Simplest thing to do, take the most senior and trusted client out for a “coffee”, and disclose to them something along the lines of, I love the work, I really like your team etc. I know you’ve mentioned about bringing me on board in passing, but I wanted to understand how would you envision it, is there something more concrete you have in mind. Chances are they’ll be like they haven’t thought about it; and let them get back to you, but they will ask you, what are you looking for and be honest with them. Hopefully that starts some dialogue and that shapes a role an idea and builds on your input. There is also a chance they have a vision “id want you to come lead x”. Which can give you a clear perspective.
I’d also just make sure that I’d drop phrases like “I’m exploring further the idea you shared on bringing me on board etc.”, that way it’s clear you’re just digging. Most people are professionals and they get it.
Normally I’d encourage to not do anything like this during the engagement and wait till it ends, but you may have to make your own judgement on that given circumstances/firm dynamic.
