Im a SOX manager in industry and if I were you I’d only take the public job if I was really serious about trying to make partner. If you’re good at sales you can rise up through the ranks, but there’s a lot of instability in consulting and risk assurance at public firms right now. Also exit opportunities from SOX at a public firm can be harder to navigate than from other service lines.
If the industry job will 100% for sure give you financial reporting experience then that’s a great option. I think transitioning to FR from SOX is a great move if you’re interested in that down the road. Being the only SOX resource at the company and not having a Manager title sounds like a red flag to me though!
Thank you for two great perspectives! I don’t believe Partner is in my future and the FR experience is definitely an option in industry. The Manager title isn’t an option because I would be reporting to the FR Manager and above
