Kill fees are totally reasonable and not uncommon. You write it into your contract terms. Since you’re declining other work while taking on a project, you need a way to protect yourself from the lost income. It can be based on the project ending before it’s started, based on what you’ve delivered so far, etc. I’ve done mine based on percentages.
I have kill fees written into my contact. The only hitch is if a big agency refuses to use my contract and makes me sign theirs. Then I don’t get that protection.
Sounds like Dentsu
How do they stop paying you if you are booked until a certain date? Don’t they have to honor that, even if they determine they don’t need you that long? Seems like the agency would be the one writing in a kill fee. Thanks in advance for clarifying.
