Curious to see how many people are doing pure controversy work, and what kind of firm (small, mid-size, BL) are you in? If you're in a bigger firm, are you the only one or are there other people as well?

And by 'pure controversy' I mean that's all you do - no M&A, no SALT, etc. You're day is spent fighting with some governmental body over a tax issue that a client has.

One last item: are you responsible for generating work, or are you more of a support person?

Mid-size, pure controversy. I am not responsible for generating work (yet) as a low level associate, but I believe the indication is that I will be responsible for that down the road. Not entirely sure when that point is in all honesty.

Small firm (4 attorneys, 7 eas/paralegals, 10 other support staff). We do pure controversy work, although if we can we will advise on things. For instance last week I fixed a client’s corporate filings. I am personally not responsible for generating work but I get a bonus for what I do bring in. Most of our work comes from referrals, other attorneys or other cpas. As my boss always says “you wouldn’t have your primary care doctor perform your heart surgery”.

I don’t know who needs to hear this (mostly As, Cs, SCs, and some Ms) but here goes.

You are important to the project, but never so important that you cannot leave the project or firm for better opportunities. Being in hero mode is good where you save the day, everyday - but in fact that is neither advisable for your progression nor a recommended practice for the firm. If you have been performing and have had decent social skills, you will not have burnt a bridge when you leave.

Home reno financing question. Have a big project coming up in the $120-150k range. Funding sources are:
- 90k from a heloc around prime
- 10k from a credit card that offers promo checks at 2-3% for 12-18 months
- 375k in a brokerage
- 5-6k per month cash that I can put towards the project, loans, or brokerage

I don't want to stop funding the brokerage because my FIRE plan is less numbers based than "hoard like dragon until it's enough" but maybe I should... How would you optimize?

Can’t decide between reporting + technical roles vs corporate accounting roles. Coming out of audit and I like both aspects. Has anyone tried both sides and have any insights? Does one of these have higher salary potential? Does corporate accounting give you a higher chance of reaching a controller position since you’re actually in the GL, whereas technical + reporting will probably have you in a specialized group in larger companies?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find.
