Oh god. As someone who left to be an Fp&a manager... ABSOLUTELY fp&a.
Would say FP&A is better for future growth opportunities! Gets you thinking like a CFO
You have no idea how many people in industry are trying to switch out of accounting into FP&A. I've never seen someone try to make the opposite switch, but I guarantee that move is very easy.
Unless you really like the company that's offering the accounting role, I recommend going the FP&A route. It's way more interesting. Imagine forward-looking and strategic work compared to compliance. Happy to chat if you want to hear more about my experience. Congrats on the offers!
I might take you up on that. Thanks for the insight. I only really know accounting but everyone I interviewed with at the company seems to be pretty confident in my ability to pick up on the role after training and being in the job for a little bit. They seemed pretty excited about my experience, so it made me feel good they are so confident in me.
I appreciate all of the insight here everyone. I’m really excited that I qualified for an FP&A role with only core assurance background in Big 4. That is the role I was leaning towards and after seeing a lot of these comments it sounds like that is the right choice. Thanks!
I actually recently accepted a Sr. Accountant role over a very good Sr. FPA role. Not sure if I made the wrong choice, but the company for the senior accountant is my dream company and offers a good equity package. I figure that maybe I can still pivot to FPA if I want after a few years.
Nice! Quite honestly, if it was that situation with an equity package, I think I’d do that too. I imagine you could still pivot if you wanted to. As long as you’re in accounting I feel like there are definitely a lot of options.
Do you want accounting or finance exits?
Accounting sucks and is only by going to get worse with more compliance. I’d choose finance all day
Coach
Try FP&A. If you don’t like it go back to accounting.
I kind of like this approach. I have an accounting background and could likely always pivot back into it.
Coach
I don't know much about FP&A, but absolutely no to senior accountant (if it is GL). Pay is bad. At least FP&A makes decent. Congratulations!
Yeah the accounting role is GL work. The company is actually offering the same salary as the FP&A. Thanks!
