Trump can’t do anything because he’s hit the 60 day limit where he needs to get congressional authorization for military force. The Iran war is deeply unpopular with most of America and I doubt Congress will go on the record authorizing military force even though the GOP is in the majority in both chambers. That would be a political death-wish much like Iraq was for decades.
So what he’s going to do instead is falsely claim that he’s won the war (like he has multiple times already) and (2) extend a ceasefire with a deal that is much worse than JCPOA, because an emboldened Iran, having been bombed twice in 12 months, will not give up its nuclear ambitions now. They have all the leverage at the negotiating table.

I’m not sure what sort of planning actually occurred, because this administration was certainly caught off guard on (1) Iran’s attacks on its GCC neighbors and (2) that Iran would actually close the SOH. We’ve heard random things about taking Kharg island to sending in a black ops team to retrieve nuclear material. It’s a fair point that Iran has been conventionally degraded, but that doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things for an enemy that fights unconventionally. If there was actual planning other than Trump “feeling it in his bones”, then we’d know what our off ramp is here, even if we have degraded Iran conventially.
The only time the United States has successfully performed regime change is when we’ve bombed our advisories into oblivion.
History tells us, that to see change, that’s what will need to happen.
This is why we need to go back to the old way of doing things. Look at the long arc of history as to what style works.

Turns out keeping the strait closed was easier than previously thought. Millions of little boats zip between the gulf and Iran every day (smuggling gas etc) so catching the ones that have hidden weapons or are dropping mines is impossible
