Dear god, it’s me, associate. All I ask for is to work for clients that are satisfied with solid legal work and advice and pay their bills on time. No going out to lunch or dinner or sporting events or concerts or clubbing together. I do the legal work, the client sends the money. Maybe I switch it up and send a holiday gift basket too but that is the extent of it. A strong work focused relationship is so much better than a 50/50 work/personal relationship.

This should work just fine if you want to stay an associate or counsel.

Perrrrrrrfect. Unfortunately I don’t think I will have too much choice in the matter due to circumstance in my group/firm.

“Pretty much no one” so you’re saying there’s a chance….

That would be nice. Unfortunately it’s not reality. You don’t necessarily have to do dinners and sporting events or whatever (I personally HATE after work events in general), but pretty much no one does meaningful business with someone else just because they do good work (that’s basically the minimum requirement).

Unless you say this in Latin and capitalize God, this doesn’t count as a prayer, sorry.

Those personal relationships matter way more than you recognize. It’s not just sending you work and money that matters. Clients who really know and trust you will tell other people about you, take you with them to new jobs, fight to use you when a new GC wants to move work to his old firm, and work with you to solve problems that arise, such as a screw up by you or your associate. Sitting in your safe room sending out memos and bills is just not how this business works.

A3, it doesn’t have to be an or situation. Many of my clients socialized with my social friends and they all know my wife and kids.

Where are you finding these clients who want to hang with associates? That sounds fun to me! But I genuinely like (most) people and getting to know them in a social setting (and no, I am not an extrovert).

For real if you’re truly getting invited to a bunch of lunches and social events, I think you’re very lucky and would be wise to lean in to the opportunity to get the face time. Even if it cuts into your billable hours you will benefit in the long run.

Considering a jump from Chicago to New York. I truly love living in Chicago and how far this salary gets me but I definitely want to try to make it in New York.

The only problem is my significant other has a lot of negative opinions about New York. I ultimately want to return to DC but I feel like a few good years in New York would be really good for me. In terms of a place to live, where in Manhattan can I find a place that's similar to River North in Chicago?

Any corp associates looking to move from biglaw to a boutique? My firm remains busy and is looking to bring on a couple associates. We’re all either hybrid or fully remote, and that’s here to stay. 1500 billables and we’re serious about it. Work is primarily ECVC, Outside GC, M&A. Pay is roughly 30% biglaw haircut, with incentive bonuses for hours and originations.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

I just finished a big jury trial with a senior partner (SP). There were co-parties w/separate counsel. SP mentally checked out, to the point that co-counsel was asking what SP was doing/if SP was okay. I ended up handling most everything. SP did a few parts but went rogue and did things that were offensive/risky/bad for client. It became clear that SP is not performing like SP used to and may be a liability. Do I tell someone at my firm? Don’t want to offend SP or cause drama, but I’m concerned.
