If you are desperate to work for Deloitte and ok to be treated as second class citizen - MD is the way to go. It’s not equal. Whoever tells you otherwise is full of it. I was talked into MD and I regret it. I am waiting for the right moment to jump, not worth limiting my career options.
Same for me. left for another big 4 and made partner 3 yrs later.
From my perspective it is solely the comp part. Principals will argue that they make a market for their services and that is the difference, but for the most part I do the same, my metrics are the same as theirs and my efforts are as well. Just my two cents.
Do not drink the cool aid. MDs are a result of expanding the partnership without diluting the equity of the firm. An employee MD will never have the same level as a PP, who are owners of the firm. If you know anyone in Partner Matters, ask them which gets determined first - PP profit sharing or MD bonus? There is no argument.
Lifetime earnings significantly less for MD. Hard to quantify that number - but can be hundreds of thousands of $ per year difference.
MD’s are employees so get benefits that PP’s have to pay for directly as they are not employees.
MD’s typically aren’t going to get senior leadership roles (but can still have some leadership roles).
My experience as an MD is that I am treated fairly equally. I had personal reasons for not wanting to go the PP route (flexibility to leave quickly if needed and not being tied to a partnership agreement). I don’t regret being “only” an MD
It really depends on your practice. In GPS, Ps and MSs are truly treated as equally as it gets. Roles are divided and in many cases MDs oversee P’s work. What’s more important is your client relationships and your competence. Network is important too.
PP also has risks. If you have substantial personal wealth or trust / inheritance coming your way, consult with a lawyer before deciding.
As for net income, the difference is negligible in the first 10 years. After that, if you’re a high performing leader, P is better. I saw an analysis of this when I was on deck.
Equity, and voting rights, MD are staff, Ps are not.
Is the pay difference between over a long period of time? Example first yet MD vs 1st year P. 5th year MD v 5th year MD?
Agreed D4, my informal polling indicates that most well compensated MDs are tgose who have been Direct Admit. I have yet to hear of any organically promoted MDs who are making over 500k
What are your thoughts on the conversion ? MD’s are told it’s uncommon. Do MD’s convert and start all over again at Principal A?
Md1 is correct, will calibrate based on your circumstances
Amazing job by Big D convincing thousands that MD is "similar" to PP. And some actually think it is better to be an MD than PP. So wrong. Partners are partners in a private business and rest are employees. I guess MD is a better name than Associate Partner.
Smart ones are seeing through this BS and getting out!
