Keep your rate. If they like you and need to go lower, they’ll say so. Don’t negotiate with yourself. ;)
It’s a tough call. The ACD title varies from agency to agency. For example, I’ve seen CDs at smaller shops take Senior Creative roles at Goodby. So your agency values you at ACD, but another place might see you as just a creative with 6 years of experience and a good book.
I like what Self 1 is saying in spirit. But in reality, if they’re hiring for mid level, it signals to me that they’re PAYING for mid level. You can try to charge what you want, at very least agencies usually reply “sorry, but $XX is our max” and then at least you know the max.
You charge relative to the level of work you'll be performing, not what you're otherwise qualified for if the employer is not looking/asking for that level of skill or experience. For example, I'm not going to ask for director rates if I'm applying for and doing an AE's job just because I can also do director stuff. Sounds like you already get that. I'd respond genuinely as you have here about your interest in the opportunity to work with them as your number one priority (add more enthusiasm here:)) and that your rate is negotiable + end with "What is the budgeted rate for this position?", then stop. End with the question.
Thanks so much and I look forward to hearing from you.

For context, I’m an ACD with 6 years experience (total, not as an ACD). I’m probably overqualified for this role but see it as an opportunity to get a foot in the door at the company and within the category in general. Appreciate any advice!
Very fair. What do you think is a reasonable rate for someone with my level/experience in NYC?
Yeah @cw1, that’s my rationale too. I’ve been in a similar situation with another company before and that’s exactly how it played out. I don’t want to miss out on a good opportunity to do the kind of work I want, but don’t want to undervalue myself (or others) either.
I should mention that it’s also an in-house role, which makes it harder for me to gauge their pay scale, since it varies greatly from company to company (whereas on the agency side, I have a pretty good idea of what’s reasonable/expected).
CW that’s exactly what I said - let them tell you the cap, don’t set it lower yourself...
ACD, check out Glassdoor.com or LinkedIn Jobs for salaries from that company and/or similarly sized others (in the same city)
Mention the salary you want and ask if that’s in line with their budget. If not, they’ll tell you how much they’re looking to pay and you can go from there
