First off, I'm glad your considering an exit to VC. The VCs I know are some of the smartest and fastest thinkers I know. That being said, there are many nuances that make it difficult to break in. I'm assuming you're coming in on the junior side so here are my thoughts.
It is its a very tight network. Incredibly tight. If you're not already in it (you'd know) you need to find some other way to break in. This isn't like consulting where if you have the chops you can probably find a job. There ar maybe 5k VCs in the whole industry (for scale think professional baseball including the farm league). It's not really about the "functions" you can fill as 95% of people on this app can "do the job". It's like, just knowing how to play baseball isn't going to cut it.
It's about building relationships w startups and making things happen for them. It's being intimately integrated into the startup ecosystem. Many times that comes from founding your own startup, working on a few successful startups, or investing on your own and a track record of "spotting good deals". It's not impossible, but an "exit" to VC is likely a long process.
Not likely outside of MBB unless you have a crazy network. Better to exit to a leadership role at a startup and if that's successful, maybe a VC will come knocking
What are some main functions within VC that needs to be filled? I'd imagine sales/relationship mgmt in addition to valuation work?
If you do a lot of valuation work, I think it's possible to exit into an analyst, maybe associate role, but probably not in an investment role.
Another perfect opportunity for a search feature. 🙄
