Try booking with another airline, if possible. BA is notorious for the high fees.
Most likely tax. Are you flying out of UK by any chance? Taxes for using points there sometimes makes it not worth it over $$$
Depends on the airport and airline. Sounds like you’re flying out of London (there are huge fees you pay with cash or points). BA also adds fees on their flights (fuel surcharge or whatever BS reason).
You can use other pointy programs to avoid the surcharge but never the taxes.
Use the BA points on codeshare AA flights through JFK or PHL instead. The in flight experience may not be as good, and Philly sucks, but it’ll save you a lot.
Pro
Yes. I burned corporate points on an $8k first class ticket on BA LHR/LGA and still had to pay ~$1500 in taxes and fees
London airports, especially Heathrow, have exorbitant fees for all airlines. Try other airports and take a train to London

BA always passes on absurd fuel surcharges and unless you’re using a redemption program that absorbs those costs, they get passed to you.
Thanks all! How about Qantas? I haven’t transferred my points yet, so I can’t see the fees, just the number of points needed
Not that I love the points guy. But this will help https://thepointsguy.com/guide/redeem-amex-points-oneworld/
I use Asia miles a lot.
BA has the highest tax/charges out of all the airlines.
Don’t use British. Use American instead
