Need some advice here. I am a fullstack developer with 5 yoe in Angular and Python. My aim is to crack FAANG companies. Now I got an offer from HSBC in a credit risk model monitoring role using Python. It is close to a data engineer role.
My question is that will it be a good idea to shift from development role to a model monitoring role if I want to move to FAANG in the future?Or does FAANG not prefer people who are not in core development roles?Amazon Microsoft Google Adobe PwC EY Citi Barclays JPMorgan Chase

No usually they rotate the strategy team for the pitches
The New Biz person is usually a senior Account who brings a big book of connections. That’s their biggest value (and being able to run a pitch process efficiently).
The other main pitch person is basically a very very good PM.
Senior Strat folks are part of the pitch process but not the owners if that makes sense.
In any case if you want to do more new biz, put your hand with your boss.
The planners I pull in on pitches are the ones that I know I don’t have to babysit and will bring presentation level ideas/research/slides. Do that.
I’ve seen it in a few places, but it’s not standard. What you CAN do—that I and many strategists have done—is become a go-to for pitches at your agency. I’m not officially a new biz strategist but I’m in most of them, leading the strategy charge.
There are pros and cons.
next step is positioning myself this way to my boss and essentially creating a new role thay justifies itself

They’re probably not going to be incentivized to silo you like that. If they win a new account that needs your support or if for whatever reason they’re slowing down on the pitch front, they’d prefer the flexibility to throw you on regular business. That said, it can’t hurt to ask and see if you could be dedicated to it. Early in my career I worked on 13 pitches in 3 years and it was one of the most transformative periods of growth in my career. Such an accelerated environment to learn in and you don’t really have clients to answer to which is 👌👌
Your RTBs for why you’re the well positioned to by the new biz strat are pretty clear too:
- accustomed to working at a fast pace
- sponge of knowledge/ good at analyzing a new category
- dope at writing primers
- can figure out scrappy ways to get to good research
- can do more than “just being a strategist” filling in as a project mgr of sorts when the job calls for it
- bonus points if you have tasteful ideas for pitch theatre that aren’t cringey
You’ll be the first to be let go if there are reductions or pitches aren’t successful.
