Do firms still offer signing bonuses or guaranteed end of year bonus for laterals?

If you’re not getting a guaranteed year end bonus in January….you’re getting the short end of the stick

like

It’s only January lol. If a firm doesn’t guarantee, don’t go there

like

What practice/location? Some are offering signing bonuses for top candidates, especially those without (or with minimal) prior moves.

like

Actually as a matter of fact, I have. But for finance

I got guaranteed EOY a few months ago

like

Is that based on meeting a pro rate hours target?

Was guaranteed full year bonus, even though I’ll only have been at the firm for less than 6 months, so sort of a hybrid signing/guaranteed year end.

like

I’ve secured signing bonuses for all of the candidates I’ve placed since late summer. If you’re in an in-demand practice area like finance (any area of specialization) or patent prosecution, signing bonuses are very common. It also helps to have multiple offers to leverage. Like someone else said, it’s still a very tough market (even for securing an initial interview) for someone with 3+ lateral moves (2 seems to be okay depending on practice/firm).

Everyone complains about high healthcare costs in the US. I understand that it’s a complex problem including drug prices, insurances etc. But no one talks about the high physician salaries. Why do surgeons make near a million in the US while they make $250K in Canada?

For any of you real estate investors, what tools or sources did you learn from when getting started. Can’t find a mentor currently so want to find some highly recommended books or videos. If focused on the tri-state area (NY, NJ, Long Island mainly) that would be even better. My hope is to buy and rent out a apartment while also owning a house and house hacking that by renting part of it out. Trying to understand all the steps, traps, and how to find if it’s a good investment.

Any tips/warnings/advice on potentially trying to move from Big 4 to either MBB or a T2 boutique firm? I’m anticipating reaching M1 in Big 4 within the next 12 months. I really like my current practice, but frankly as I eye comp across the bowl, I’m hungry for more elsewhere, even with the recent Big 4 bumps. I have 5 YOE (3 consulting, 2 industry) all within somewhat niche subject matter, as well as my MBA (non “prestigious” school however). Any thoughts or clarifying questions are welcome, TIA

I lateraled from a small firm to regional big law last year. I was told that my offer was commensurate with class year (5th year). The firm recently increased first year salary, with a 5% increase for all other attorneys. My original salary was equal to the new first year salary. The difference between my new salary and a first year is now $10k. I think it is fairly obvious that the hiring partner was not truthful with me. How would you address this? Is another lateral move my only option?
