Do I always need to reveal my current CTC to HRs when #switching to other companies?
In my experience, all HRs try to know your current #CTC either to know if you are a budget fit / to give you minimum hike specially if you have been underpaid all these years.
However, companies with good pay/culture would still proceed with your interviews even if you refuse to reveal your current compensation. Taking a few examples,
🪣 of service based MNCs like Nagarro/Infosys and others:
🥹 They will never proceed without you revealing your CTC.
🥲 Personally I gave 3 online assessment rounds, 2-3 technical interview rounds and in the last round HR asked for my current compensation.
🌚 When I made it clear I can't reveal my CTC without them giving an offer, even after HR insisted it was her 'right' to know my current compensation, she dropped my profile.
✅ If my profile was dropped at the last stage just because I won't reveal compensation, I can only assume it's a strict internal rule to not hire candidates without knowing their CTCs to lowballing them.
🪣 of startups/companies with better mindset:
🥹 HRs will try to get you reveal your CTC
🫡 If you don't budge, and ask them their budget instead, they will either reveal budget so that you can decide if they are offering numbers you are expecting
🙌 Or, they will proceed with the rounds saying money can be discussed at a later point of time.
I would strongly suggest you to join such companies even if the pay is not staggering - Such companies, even if they are not a known brand, would have a good culture.
This theory was affirmed when I joined Loyalty Juggernaut without revealing my CTCs, working with talented iOS Developers like Swapnanil Dhol, Raghav Vashisht kept me up to speed.
When I was preparing to switch to Intuit, I gave interview at multiple companies and again, I noticed the same pattern:
Really good companies offering good pay like Uber, CRED, Google, Intuit and more don't care about your current compensation if you make that clear.
The next time you are switching, try to crack companies with good culture and great pay. And answering the "What's your current compensation" the right way will help you segment companies in the right category ;)
