Do I have to break in somehow to federal government roles? My impression is that a lot are gatekept for people who are already in it.

Its honestly just plain luck if you are hired without knowing someone or going to church with them. There is no specific criteria regardless of qualifications, i worked in a departament that promoted people with less education and experience. It still makes no sense. If you are an intelectual individual that asks questions and has innovative ideas then you will most likely not be a good fit. They like yes people who follow blindly. And ethics? May as well throw those out the window, if you are not the type that can look away don't apply. It makes you physically sick if you are an ethical person with a moral compass.

That's my problem exactly! I understand why military staff are hired first. They don't ask questions and it's a yes sir no sir type of thing. People like me ask questions and have a brain that can think on its own. I really don't fit in.

apply keep applying and be open minded to ALL federal agencies that do policy. it takes about 4-6 years and go
to the workshops on federal
resumes helps a to

Having never worked in a federal job, it seems that your circumstances matter quite a bit, like where you've worked previously, your family situation, demographics, geography, etc. The recruitment process is designed to take longer than in the private sector, where in many cases employers know immediately if the company will hire you.

Nothing wrong in trying. You'll never know unless you take the risk. And funny are those people who are gatekeeping something taht could've helped others.

Don't even try to apply for a government job if you've ever been arrested or convicted. Folks without prior arrests or convictions have a hard enough time breaking in.

Not clear on your question, if you're interested in federal employment, they key is to apply for positions that you already possess experience in, and submit a resume that has been proofed by at least 2 people.

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)

I can really use some direction. My background, I've worked 2 years in strategy and am currently coming off an exhausting year 2 in investment banking. I didn't particularly enjoy either role and am not interested in moving over to the buy-side or some monotonous FP&A role. Everybody says there's exit-ops aplenty, but I find myself with less options and even more picky than I did as an ambitious T2 undergrad student. Where do I go from here?

My entire worldview/outlook on my career and what I want has changed since covid happened. Can someone explain what being “of counsel” is like at larger law firms - are they independent contractors? Make their own hours? How do you get a gig like that? I don’t think I want to be a partner anymore.

My dilemma… I am an injury adjuster at a carrier experiencing high inventory that’s barely manageable. A competitor offered a higher salary and manageable workload. BUT, I would like to get into underwriting. I applied for UW position w/ a different carrier and they’ve made an offer. It’s lower than my current salary and significantly lower than what I’d make by taking the first offer. Do I take the high salary and stay in claims or go for UW in hopes it will be best in long run?

If you take a job as a customer success mgr for ads, or as a partnership mgr for learning solutions for industry X, are you going to get stuck in those products (ads, learning solutions), roles (CS, sales/partnerships), or target industry (X)?
