My entire worldview/outlook on my career and what I want has changed since covid happened. Can someone explain what being “of counsel” is like at larger law firms - are they independent contractors? Make their own hours? How do you get a gig like that? I don’t think I want to be a partner anymore.

It’s different at different firms. I’m an employee just like everyone basically who isn’t a partner. I have a contract with the firm that sets out the terms of my employment. I don’t have set hours but I didn’t have them before. I work for most of the same clients I’ve been working for my entire career. I didn’t want to be partner (I have no interest in working 2500+ hours per year and even less interest in chasing business) and I’m very good at my job. So this is what they offered me. I basically have a senior role on all of my cases, along with partners, and I do the majority of the real work.

It’s a good role if you like doing actual litigating and don’t care that you make less than many people who frankly aren’t the best at the actual work.

Hi fishes,

This annual appraisal I have got a good % of appraisal increment on my salary but I was not promoted to a senior developer (although I have been mentoring a junior dev in my team and been part of building the project by implementing new technologies and tweaks) and my total YoE is 3.5+ years. What could be the reasons? What should I do now?

Thanks in advance!!

This track usually leads to director of revenue. Offer 2 - internal audit staff so SOX and compliance projects.
