Do other folks have problems with family members/friends calling them throughout the workday for non-essential purposes? I’m the only lawyer in my family and I get 3+ calls a day from relatives who just want to chitchat for half an hour and talk about what we ate for breakfast. I try to hint that I’m busy but they get offended and act as if I don’t care about them. Is this a universal experience or just my family being dysfunctional?

Is it really being dysfunctional if you haven’t been direct with them? You’ve “hinted” that you’re busy - sounds like you just need to be more direct and either a) tell them that you can’t take calls during the work day and are happy to catch up later or b) ignore their calls when you’re not available, call them back, and explain the same as above

Don’t pick up and call them back after hours.

A7 I answer every call and, depending on the situation, I tell her at the beginning of the call I am pressed on an urgent deadline. The issues splits on either (1) she does not perceive the deadline as urgent and/or (2) disagrees that I can’t multitask like her with her remote job.

Start talking about your work, and they will get bored and hung up

Stop answering lol

I keep my phone on silent and they all know it. I respond to texts on my own time - maybe 5min after receiving. Maybe 3 hrs, maybe the next day. I may call back when driving home if I feel like it but that's a big if.

like

I’m confused - do you not have voicemail?

like

You gotta prioritize yourself, and that’s not being selfish. If your family cares enough to call you that often, then I’m sure they love you enough to understand that you can’t be answering on demand and that you’ll call them back when you can.

like

Don't answer the phone

like

Tell them you have a really unreasonable boss and have meetings all day long and say you can’t be reached before 7 pm or weekends

like

I just text and ask if its urgent or if I can call back on the drive home. Mainly because my adhd needs to know if it was something I actually care about knowing right away. 50/50 if I actually remember to call on the drive home.

I put my phone on silent and let calls go to voicemail

I'm working at a startup where I feel like I've spent as much time trying to deal with product issues vs working on roadmap items. I get this is bound to happen in a start up but is this common? How did you learn those skills, and what types of documents do you speed read in practice? Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)
