He's just saying the quiet part out loud and dropping the facade. Tech companies have been doing this for years, bringing cafes, food, dry cleaning, hair salons, etc. onto their campuses so that employees had the "convenience" of everything in one place. Really you never leave and end up pumping the $$ right back into company pockets. There's a reason it's called golden handcuffs.

The article states that everything is available in the building, including cafes and daycare. I’m not sure how you are getting that they are locked in a building all day and can’t even drink coffee. I think this is a stretch. Providing these types of benefits for your employees used to be looked at as a perk. Now that everyone has gotten a taste of W@H, businesses who want their employees in the building can not win.
What else does 'hold them captive' sound like to you?
I think this response is also leaning on others to quietly leave the company without having to be responsible for letting them go.

I think the language in which he speaks is more toxic than the concept. If I ever heard my CEO say “Hold them captive” I would be looking for new jobs right away. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to provide resources so employees don’t have to leave the building, but the way he speaks is a more concerning red flag imo.
Agreed. It's the attitude and the arrogance that throws me off.
I mean I agree with everyone else, but also if I could have a gym onsite, better food prepared for me, etc (things to reduce my time commuting between) I think it would be a relief. Right now doing all of those things independently outside of the office burns a lot of time too, that I would rather not be running all around for. But that doesn’t mean I would want the culture of Not being allowed to still leave at 5pm if I choose to.
Yea I’ll take the convenience of all those things without the ban lol. The option would be nice but the culture is not
