Do you all only offer flat fee or hourly rates from client? If so, why. Learning that it’s mainly flat fee.

We are almost entirely flat fee. Easier to get clients to pay whole amount up front rather than spending time to track them down with hourly billing. Attracts clients who are serious and can actually pay rather than those who think you won’t need to spend much time on their case so they won’t have to pay much. We’ve found clients vastly underestimate the time spent on their cases. We’ll do hourly on matters that are more complicated where the amount of time we’ll work on the case is more uncertain. Flat fee is also easier to keep track of because it doesn’t go in trust account per our rep agreements. Not having to track time is also a great benefit of flat fees.

I’m a new associate working for a well-known defense attorney in my state. On one hand, I’m thankful for the opportunity to learn from one of the best, but he also excoriates and belittles me for my mistakes. Any advice on how much it tolerable? I am here to learn and advance my career but he can be pretty nasty. (My mistakes are no worse than you’d expect a 1st year associate to make, in case you’re all wondering if I’m a major screw-up who deserves it) I leave work feeling a foot tall.
