Do you discuss your comp with coworkers? I don't mind doing it, but I feel the risk of it leading to unnecessary drama. A coworker who is pretty much at the same level as I am, and probably makes the same or slightly less than I do, wanted to know how much I earn. I froze and said we can talk later. Have any of you disclosed this kind of info to coworkers and had it go south?

I don't. I feel like the benefit of discussing salary does not even come close to the potential drawbacks of having an awkward work environment. Especially when people blame you for making more than them or build resentment when it's not your fault…

Honestly, I don’t see the problem with discussing pay. Transparency can help everyone know what’s fair and avoid getting screwed. Of course, it depends on the vibe and trust with your coworkers, but I’ve found being open usually builds respect, not drama. If someone asks, I think it’s better to be straightforward than freeze up!

I once asked salary information from senior employee in our dept. I was told I should expect to make $60,000 less than I was currently making. No one feels comfortable talking about salary because people will use their and bring what he or she makes.

Largest issue is once you say your pay, they can now throw you under the bus and say, so in so said their pay is x. I want x too. Now your manager gonna look for reason to get rid of you.
