I get told I’m a bitch if it makes you feel better lol. Not much any more but I still get told I talk too much and am essentially too opinionated. It’s frustrating because that’s vague feedback. I would ask for specifics. “What do you mean by soft spoken, hard to hear or I don’t speak with an assertive tone? What do you think is the negative impact of this in my role? What would you recommend I adjust or work on, and what positive outcome do you anticipate coming from me making that change?” Ask them to help you understand what they mean on a more granular level.
Also, I was told I talk a lot after a meeting where only one of my 12 male peers (I’m one of two females), myself and the other woman were willing to speak up about a major issue. The guys? No feedback. Guess who else got told they spoke to much? Yep, the only other female.
Hi!
You got some great questions from District Manager 1.
I agree, require for more specific feedback.
I would also think about “who” is that feedback coming from? Do you need/want to listen to that person? You may want to inquire for some additional feedback from other people too.
Lastly, being “soft spoken” doesn’t mean being ineffective in your communication.
I would get curious about what’s the impact that your style has on your career and based on that answer identify potential areas of improvement.
Wish you all the best! :)
if you’d like to chat further, feel free to message me/connect on LI. Happy to learn more about your situation and offer some additional insights.
I’m pretty sure my team WISHES I was called soft-spoken. And by ‘wishes’, I mean ‘prays’
Soft spoken isn’t an insult in most roles. Do you think it’s making you ineffective at getting your point across or buy in?
