100%, major metro offices have more senior leaders & exposure
Depends on the company/industry.
I wanted a career in consulting and finance so moving from Texas to NYC was a great move for me.
I actually think I had much more exposure in a smaller office because it was easier to build meaningful relationships with senior management. It was much harder to get noticed in NY unless I was spending WAY more effort.
i think it is industry based for sure
i moved to NY and got a huge raise and saved more money, got promotions and learned a ton
then i moved back to my hometown and im kind of dominating the market with my experience
Same. Austin & NYC, then back home in my case.

New York is the best place for many industries because so many firms are headquartered here. In certain ones like financial services, you’d be kind of a fool to live anywhere else.
It is industry-dependent, though. Some industries’ centers of gravity are elsewhere. New York generally gives you a leg up, though.
London is also very good for FS.
Pro
Without a doubt—there’s a reason it’s expensive to live in those places. At the end of the day it’s where more opportunities are.
I picked my current office location because my service lines team in Chicago was 10x the size of Nashville’s office. Consulting is a relationship game and face time/ease of interaction matters.
I mean, try to be born and raised in a remote village in the South of Italy! Even if you move, you start with disadvantages like not being a native speaker, rent & other expenses like flights back home, the emotional impact of missing relatives...
Absolutely! I used to live in SE PA and salaries were severely depressed if existing at all. I moved to north New Jersey and doubled my salary overnight- never looked back.
Rising Star
Absolutely. I moved from my small Midwest city to Chicago where there is a much larger client base.
Bigger office, more opportunities. Top 10 offices are where to go if you are focused on career advancement. Obviously you need all the other skills and accomplishments too.
NYC is a career accelerator in most fields (even public sector ) I’d think SF is the same.
Yes of course.
What about New York specifically?
100%
But I work from home as a result so I don't really care overall. My closest office is a 10 hour drive away.
Makes sense - thank you!
Tech outside Bay Area is not the same - there is just more going on here
No absolutely not. But to be fair it may vary by industry and practice. My industry has been decimated and we’re a pittance of what we were. This makes progression a harder sell no matter what we are told.
