Ummmmm yes. You should be there. Assuming there’s a higher level CD/CW that’s going on the shoots currently? There has to be a copywriter on set. You should be speaking up and asking leadership to go so you can learn. Might be a budget thing but you still need to learn how it all works on set so you can go on your own. Agency needs to invest in your growth. And if your scripts are the ones being produced, it’s only right that you be there. Please speak up. Not in an “I deserve this” way, but in an “I’d like to learn and also be there as my scripts are coming to life.” You should also ask your partner to speak up on your behalf.
Came here to say this. And ECD 1 was already all over it. The only way you can learn is by being there. And the finished product will be better for having your unique lens on set whether there is dialogue or not. 💯
In my past role as CD, if you were on the creative team, you went to the shoot. Juniors went to as many shoots as I could muster. Interns went. Anyone who had never been, went. How else are you supposed to learn this stuff?
Creatives used to be able to go if it was your idea or work that got produced. Now it’s super rare and the trend seems to be that they send one CD/GCD creative to make sure things are good to save costs
In my agency, if it’s a local shoot, the CW goes (given that the film has some copy). If it’s abroad, almost always the CW goes unless there are two CDs that are copy based.
Every agency—and budget—is different. My partner and I used to run shoots as mid-levels because we had been going to them for years and our CDs trusted us. (I would say this is probably rare though.) I believe the team whose idea it is should always get to go, but these days that’s not always possible due to smaller budgets. Advocate for yourself and ask to go to learn the ropes. They might say no, but at least you know you tried.
It depends on the type of spot you’re shooting. If there’s a lot of dialogue and wild lines rather than it being a more visual spot, usually a writer goes, too.
We’re only able to send one creative usually due to budget and it’s almost always the CD (writer), sometimes an ACD (writer) if there is one.
It’s a CD, so it’s less important if they’re copy or art because they should be able to inform both.
Used to be that the writer was always invited, but cost-cutting and budgets have made it rarer and rarer in recent years. It’s not you, it’s the agency model failing to the point where saving a couple grand for travel costs on a shoot really does make a difference to the bottom line.
If you’re not being invited to shoots, it might have more to do with you than your job title. Your bosses need to see that you have a strong point of view and high standards and are not afraid to speak your mind. When they know you always add value, you’ll be invited.
The creative team should go on every shoot if it’s their work.
Some agencies don’t do that. Good ones worth working at do.
I’ve only seen director levels at shoots. Even then it’s was only like 50% of the time.
