Rising Star
Chicago, like other cities, is rapidly losing its value. Between COVID and social distancing; lack of police protection; the shutdown of offices; closures of public spaces, entertainment venues, shops, restaurants and bars; the riots; rising crime; fiscal mismanagement; high taxes; closure and progressive politics, why stay? I’d like to ask Mayor Lightfoot why I should stay. If I were single in my twenties I’d live with Mom and Dad and bank my paychecks.
If the fair tax proposal goes through then a lot of ppl will not only leave the city but the state
Rising Star
That’s right because the fair tax is not a typical graduated progressive tax like most states, where you pay an incrementally higher rate per each bracket (so if you pay, say , 3% on income over $250k and 6% on income above $250k you pay 3% up to $250k and 6% on all income earned above $250k. So if you make $300k you pay 6% on 50k and 3% on 250k). Pritzker’s plan is for people to pay that rate for their entire income when you hit the top bracket, 7.95%. Problem is, as more wealthy people continue to leave the state and the fiscal problems increase without reductions in spending, it’s practically inevitable that lower tax brackets will pay higher rates down the road . It’s well-documented that this happened in Connecticut, another state that has continued to drive people our due to fiscal irresponsibility.
I think river north is feeling increasingly unsafe so that could explain some of the exodus.
Rising Star
River North was relatively safe for many years due changes to housing patterns implemented by Daley and the concomitant lowering of crime through effective policing. Indifference to public safety by elected officials may continue to exacerbate current problems, unfortunately
Chicago is much cheaper comparatively, so likely won't see as big of a drop. I do think there will be some flight time suburbs and additional space
Makes Sense - also, I think winters are better in the city
Exodus has already started. Governor Rauner now a Florida resident. As are most of my buddies. It will accelerate over the next few years. Sell now. I’m out.
Lot of ppl leaving river north also bc of the many other attractive neighborhoods that are seeing more tradfic. Lot of pull from developing West Loop+South Loop and areas like Logan Sq, Wicker, West Town.
Used to only go to RN, but started venturing out and now I barely go to RN
