Do you think it's fair that people are getting fired for sharing their personal opinions or political beliefs on social media? I keep seeing stories of people losing their jobs because of what they post but shouldn't be allowed to share our own beliefs on our own social media profiles?

Is it fair, probably not but life isnt fair. Dont post dumb stuff online. It isnt that hard.

Nothing changes with anything you post. The only thing you risk is upsetting people needlessly.

There is plenty i want to say about a specific group... But I gain nothing by doing it.

Frankly, I pretty much hate both parties now given the recent turn of events. Both are hypocritical at their core.

Anyways, here we are. Nothing changes.

It’s okay to share your opinion and you shouldn’t be fired for it. What isn’t okay is celebrating someone’s death. Thats an ethical issue not a freedom of speech issue. So if they want to fire that person, go right ahead

What exactly is your question? The thread isn’t about Charlie’s remarks it’s about other people’s remarks.

IMO it is absolutely unreasonable that people are being fired for thinking the world is a better place without a racist, sexist man who spewed a hateful rhetoric against minorities but the people who vocally support that rhetoric are not. I’m not celebrating, but I’m also not even a little bit sad that he won’t be able to continue his disgusting work.

Truth!

You are an agent of your company, so while it’s harsh it is appropriate at times. People should know by now that nothing is private anymore

like

I have a private life outside of work life and I didn’t give them consent to control my private life when I am not in workspace.

You obviously weren't a Charlie follower. He encouraged open discussions between people of all ages and life. He cited scripture and knew the bible. He lived his life as the bible directs. He visited numerous colleges to have open debates and discussions so that both sides understood each other. He never berated people for their opinions or thoughts, even and especially if they went against everything he stood for.. Having open dialog between people with different beliefs is very healthy amd necessary. Not having discussions with people whose thoughts and opinions differ from yours is both unhealthy and unsafe. We can't hate and wish death on people who don't see our views. We can't and should not ever celebrate or be indifferent to another person's death, especially when the were unalived for having different views. I disagree with a lot of people from religion to politics and I would not ever celebrate or not care if they lost their lives over it. I don't know anyone else who has encouraged the discussions to our young people and stil respected their views and gave them a platform of oprn dialog. Charlie deserves the respect and IMO he also deserves to have the flags at half mast.

I think it’s ironic for the party of “cancel culture is bad” to be so happy to cancel people.

But I also think that any actual celebrations around the death of someone are horrible, and if you choose to make a public statement celebrating something like that, you deserve to face consequences of that, which might include your employer not wanting to be associated with you.

The US Rep from Louisiana going off about wanting to go after business licenses and drivers licenses is insane

likehelpful

The only thing cancel culture-y about this is that people are contacting employers. Cheering on a brutal and graphic murder would have had you ostracised from polite society before cancel culture was even a term.

like

Yes, I think they should be fired. If they’re talking about being happy he was murder on the other hand if it’s just political views no I don’t think it should be fired for that.

like

"For sharing the personal opinions or political beliefs"? No. But for celebrating the death of someone whose views they opposed? Yes - they are the problem. They are the reason CK spent his time trying to have open conversations. They are the hateful ones. CK was not hateful, sexist, or racist. And if you listen to his actual arguments, you'd know that.

All US states (except for Montana) and DC are at-will jurisdictions for employment. They can fire you for anything other than something related to you being part of a protected class - so yeah, I don’t see how posting stuff on social media is any different than any other reason people might be fired for something. Also, even if you’re not an agent of your employer, you still represent them in some way, so they have every right to not be affiliated with you (just like you have every right to quit if they take a stance you don’t support)

like

Common sense should outweigh emotional outpouring in society and many people either forgotten that or never learned it. Actions have consequences, but minding your own business costs nothing. People are entitled to their feelings but it doesn't always need to be on display. Bottom line, the freedoms people spout about came from the plight of those who suffered before us. They accepted the consequences of their actions for what was important to them. If you lose a job based on your actions (talking is an action), then be prepared to accept what comes with it, whether it is a loss of job, friends, loves, etc.

like

Regular people are celebrating and part of that is in the posts they posted which is leading them to lose their job. Justifiably losing their jobs. Consequences. I agree a significant amount of celebs and public figures denounced the assassination, w8th the exception of a few, like Stevem King who was forced to apologize for his lies on social media. Now, book stores are removing his books. Again, justified. There have been reporters, school teachers, college professors, government employees, business owners and medical professionals who were fired over their disgusting celebrational posts on a murder of a young, married father of 2 and they lost their jobs justifiably. you can disagree with 💯 of what Charlie stood for, but vulgar and vile posts have consequences. There's currently a list of over 20k unique individuals who have posted disgusting words, and the people obtaining this information states there will be 40k on the list today.

You can't hide/delete what you post online.

Who is getting fired for sharing opinions on social media?
I sense a bias in your question.
People getting fired are not sharing simple opinions (i.e. I like Trump, I hate Kamala, etc...)
They are getting fired for supporting political murderds.
Re-phrase your question and be honest about what is actually happening.

Absolutely. Most jobs are at will. And when you show your employer who you really are, it's their prerogative to let you go.

I think its fair if you are going to laugh at someone for loosing the right to free speech which is constitutional. Otherwise maybe not. But we have rights the constitution gave us. If you laugh at or go against them, yes, firing from a job is a decent option

like

I like to say that we have freedom of speech just not freedom of consequences. Say what you want, legally you're well within your rights, but there still may be consequences.

like

If you're condoning violence or somehow celebrating Charlie Kirk's assassination, ABSOLUTELY!

like

It depends on what you are posting. Normally no you shouldn't be fired for posting opinions or political beliefs. However if you celebrate the death or murder of someone, advocate for violence, etc. you should unquestionably be fired. I do not want someone who thinks violence, murder or death should be celebrated or promoted working at my company.

You always have freedom of speech to say whatever hateful things you want but you never have freedom from the consequences of your speech. Too often people forget that rights come with responsibilities.

Currently 25 y/o making 70k/year in Boston. I grew up pretty poor and I have minimal financial education. A lot of my salary now goes towards helping my parents get out of debt. My parents are no longer able to live on their own, so considering selling my grandmas house where they live (maybe 550k), paying off their mortgage (100k) and buying a duplex (between them they make about 55k/year). Is buying a two family home a good investment ? How much can I afford to spend on a new house?
