I’ve been a government worker for over a decade, and I’ve noticed a big shift in how we’re talked about. It feels like public servants have become easy targets, and it’s draining. But I think about why I took this job in the first place.
Never in my life have I felt so degraded and disrespected. It’s been a complete 180 and the rate in which it’s getting worse is increasing. I’ve never been so taken aback or just outright devastated. I loved my career. Loved administering government assistance. I am the sickest I’ve ever been in my life. And right now, it’s not even ALL policy, it’s ALL admin.
The rhetoric about government workers has really taken a dark and accelerated turn in just the past few weeks. There have always been snarky comments, but not like this. People are delighted that individuals who have given so much to work for the government are having their lives destroyed. I don't have words to describe how disgusting this is. As for the future, I'm not even sure how we'll get through 2025.
Prayer!!
Yep. 29 1/2 years of working in state government and 10 years in higher education administration prior to state service. The solid (but not cheap and not cadallic) health care and promise of a small pension were the payoff of 40 years without once getting a cola anywhere close to the rate of inflation. Helping society, supporting students and later supporting the general health and welfare of the public, made me proud. In years with crappy political leadership we could sigh and say this too will pass. I don't think it will pass in four years. The long term destruction of the us democracy and the public services of a moderately civilized county will not survive the current administration.
Absolutely. I agree. It seems everything done is dissected and critically analyzed. People I engage with seem more and more agitated and angry.
I've been with the government for 37 years. I have been through re-orgs, Rif's, and shut downs many times. I have never, in all of my years, seen this kind of negativity towards us. You can basically blame 2 people for that. I Experienced it a little during the 30 day shutdown, but that was short lived, and basically stopped when Covid came around and everyone was shut down. They got a taste of what a shutdown could do to someone.
I have 2 years until I can fully retire...was waiting for the age. Now, I'm taking the VERA. I don't think I can stick it out for another 2 years.
37 years, many re-orgs and have never seen anything like this… If that doesn’t tell us something, I don’t know what does. I am so sorry to hear this but am glad you’ve made the decision you have.
yes. I had no idea that government employees had such a load of work and impossible to meet deadlines. Why doesn’t 60 minutes or some investigative journalism do some enlightening because at the end of the day, I DO have people leave my team before one year because they can’t handle the work and go back to PRIVATE because it’s easier. There are almost no benefits and generally the flexibility and pay is lower.
Workers comp claims examiner in one division have two and a half times the normal case load & they're doing work to help sick workers attending to various nuclear programs. The bull...t going on in the last 3 months is treacherous to everyone, even senior management.
Physical stress is causing disabilities to many of them.

My advice would be to pray and stay off offline. Fasting from online articles and social media for a week or even a few days will do wonders for your mood. Just my 2 cents.
As I see them deliver a few piece of junk mail everyday.
They don't drive the mail truck around much because the load is so low and I wonder why they don't just deliver every other day. They continue to lose billions every year. Sometimes it's just hard to defend.
Wait, you're thinking Federal Employee = Mail Carrier? Now I'm wondering how many others think this... 🤦
Truth is less than 20% of Federal employees work for the US postal Service, according to Pew Research in Nov. 2024 ( https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/01/07/what-the-data-says-about-federal-workers/ ). And the Postal Service acts as a semi-autonomous entity as it is.
Actually, my dad had the hardest time wrapping his head around what a Federal employee did. No wonder his good friend, who worked at NSA, looked aghast when he could only summon up a mailman for us kids as an example!
(I expanded beyond the scope of your comment in my reply. Pardon my responding to hella lot more than, hey, nobody uses the mail as much anymore:)
Federal employees are actually the people who inspect raw meat to make sure it's safe. They gather, analyze and report data for hurricane prediction and follow-up. They do their damnedest to help people after catastrophes. They are the nurses at the VA hospital. The poor soul who on the phone trying to help you figure out Social Security. They are the park rangers. They track diseases, both here and abroad, to keep us healthy. They track satellites at NASA. They wade into and sample toxic waste to find out what the heck it is so we don't die from it. They do their damndest to keep our air and water from killing us. They monitor & manage waterways and forests so our country can actually function. Hell, they're on the front lines for cross-jurisdictional law enforcement! They risk their lives to put out forest fires. They even protect government buildings like the U,S. Capitol AND GET KILLED FOR IT. They are customs officials. The historians. The researchers. It's amazing to think about it! MY GOD, FEDERAL EMPLOYEES do EVERYTHING to PROTECT THE EVERYDAY AMERICAN CITIZEN EVERY SINGLE FREAKING DAY. Their mission is to protect everyone's health and safety.
And they do it for LESS MONEY than private sector employees! And they do it BECAUSE THEY CARE.
Sorry, it's not you. Seeing so many people, disrespected and tossed away after so much dedication and service to our country really breaks my heart and makes me so angry. And this will have such a devastating ripple effect on all the people who are served by these dedicated individuals. This isn't directed at your comment. I'm glad you brought it up. The senseless actions we're seeing over and over right now will have consequences for generations-- unless we do something to stop this right now.
I don't feel beaten down. I feel disrespected. I retired from military service and chose employment with the federal government because of the mission, not the money. I've served it very well for 11 years and another retirement is coming soon, even if it's VERA. Sadly, America is getting all that it deserves for electing the same folks in D.C. and it's unfortunate for those that didn't vote for #47. The same people that disrespect us will be begging for our help if they're not already.
Thank you for your service....military brat myself, so I support organizations and projects that enhance the lives of veterans and military families whenever I can. I disagree on one tiny point: I don't believe that America DESERVES what she's getting from D.C., but I do believe she's getting what she CHOSE. Like a beautiful woman who makes a horrific choice for a husband, I just shake my head and think, "America, love yourself more. You deserve better than this." Hang in there, government workers. We who see you and hear you and understand what you do for this country....APPRECIATE you!!!
You should try being a teacher.
everyone is entitled to their own opinion good , bad , or indifferent
As a Reservist that knocks on the doors of those at their roughest time, I get complimented and thanked all the time for being there. I've never been one to give attention to what "they" say, even when working in the corporate world. Not even in my personal life. I am confident in my skills and work ethic. And I don't look for rewards or accolades, even though I do receive them.
I learned a long time ago that what someone says about me is none of my business.
It baffles me that so many people are seeking approval from complete strangers on social media.
It doesn't matter what someone else says about you whether they be right or wrong. You know the truth. It's time to get the "others" out of your head and focus on you. And if there are some opportunities for you to become a better person, employee, boss, friend, etc., do that!
Y'all be safe out there!😇
Many people have opinions varying in degree , just have accept the positive and ignore the negative , we are all entitled to our opinions good or bad , learn to decipher good and constructive and just let the wind blow away the negative
If Democrats didn't have such a hard time getting candidates, things would be different. So think about this next time a candidate asks for support of volunteers. You've gotta work at it.
I've worked with a LOT of government worker. There are lazy ones and their are hard working ones. I don't think the mix is much different in the private sector.
The online chatter is just noisier and note a true reflection of the vox populi. Government workers are appreciated when the public understands just what public servants do to make our lives better. The teaching of Civics was taken out of the public schools, so there are nearly two generations of citizens who have been failed by the American education system. I'm so sorry any government worker has to feel like a target. So undeserved. I appreciate you. I'm rooting for you...and most of all, I'm praying for you.
Oops...meant to type, ".....and NOT a true reflection of the vox populi."....
