Does anyone feel like tailoring resumes for every single tech application takes way too much time compared to the number of responses you actually get? I understand why customization matters but sometimes I spend an hour adjusting keywords just to get rejected automatically anyway. How detailed are you making your applications these days? Would love to know if anyone found a strategy that consistently led to interviews instead of silence.

Sure there's the quality vs. quantity argument but IMO in this market it's a waste of time. The response rate is abysmal anyway so are a few keyword tweaks really going to make that much of a difference? You'll be way more efficient if just blast it everywhere and hope for a few nibbles.

I’ve been customizing jobs in a fit for am k re writing my resume no just keywords and maybe a slight tweak to summary and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t

I’ll customize my resume if:
- the company is relatively small
- I’m applying through the company site or branded job portal
- someone in my network suggests I apply
- the job description indicates a strong match with my skills and career goals.

Otherwise I don’t waste the time. I’ve already analyzed my resume with AI six ways from Sunday and it is what it is. Considering a career pivot anyway because I’m sick to death of W2 tech work.

Easier said than done as a full stack dev with heavy scrum/PM/team lead experience. Things rarely line up cleanly. I’ve also spent years on the hiring end of things. If I need angular, C#, .Net, and SQL Server, I might select someone with React only experience listed but clearly has above average DB chops.

I used to do the exact same thing. I’d spend an hour or more tailoring a resume for every single application, tweaking keywords, rewriting bullets, trying to perfectly mirror every job description. After a while I realized the effort-to-return ratio just wasn’t sustainable anymore, especially in this market.

What changed things for me was building one REALLY strong “core” resume centered around the role I actually wanted long term: Senior Program Manager. Instead of chasing every posting individually, I focused on making that one version clearly communicate:
• the level I operate at
• the types of problems I solve
• cross-functional leadership
• measurable impact
• the story of my career trajectory

Once I locked that in, I stopped heavily customizing for every application and started applying with consistency and volume while networking where I could. Ironically, I started getting better results that way, and it eventually led me to my current role at Chime.

At this point I’m honestly pretty against rebuilding resumes for every single role unless it’s a massive pivot in function or industry. The hiring market has become too imbalanced for candidates to spend hours per application with little to no feedback loop.

My advice now:

1. Build one excellent “flagship” resume for the exact role you want.
2. Optimize it for clarity, impact, and positioning.
3. Minor tweaks only when truly necessary.
4. Spend the saved time networking, reaching out to people, and applying consistently.

That strategy was way healthier mentally and way more effective for me personally.

Same. I only used one very optimized resume that showed impact and results, and that got me plenty of interviews. Tried to use my time elsewhere in the search.

It really doesn’t take that long. I use Claude and give specific command to take the JD and my resume and fill the gaps. I store the command in a word doc and update the role name and company each time. It takes a minute to spit out a resume that doesn’t sound like AI nor like a job description. I do it every time now for any role LinkedIn or any other site finds me a good match. Since I started doing this more activity is picking up. In my career it has never taken me more than 2-3 weeks to land a great role. Boy times have changed in just a couple of years. I also used Claude to make my LinkedIn profile and others platforms stand out and get noticed in searches for roles I am a good match for. I didn’t even have to link my profile, Claude told me it knows me better than any recruiter because of all the resumes I have customized, without breaching the integrity of my capabilities. My views are shooting up and now doors are opening. You can’t be lazy in this era. I have learned AI with Claude, CoPilot, Perplexity and ChatGTP on such a better level. And have even developed excel and pot’s using AI down to formula calculations that can be automated very easily with real data sources. I’m not even a programmer or that technical. AI is trainable if you take the time. I didn’t pay for classes, I just dive in.

In this market you're going to wish and pray no matter how much time you spend tuning your resume between applications.

If this were last year, I’d say customize it almost always. I had 3 great offers within a month in Jan 2025, this year took 3 months to get 1 almost lateral move offer. I was expecting to get a handful of responses afterwards because I was still applying to places until I got and accept my offer, but only got one that was an automated first interview.

And I’m not in a historically competitive city for tech, but between the economy and AI unknowns there just were not very many opportunities getting posted.

like

I completely understand your point and agree it’s such a pain having to customize every single resume, it takes so much extra time and effort. I attribute this to the demand, there are fewer roles than applicants. Recruiters and hiring managers are requiring for candidates to meet 95+% of the job description.
I’ve had interviews where I didn’t have experience with a simple tool and that was the disqualifying factor. It’s ridiculous but the sad truth these days.

Hang in there, you’ll land a role soon, stick to a system that works for you.

I was doing the resume for each application but I update my resume monthly now. I give some time each day to some Linkedin learning, then some applications. At this point, my 25+ years experience has been reworded countless times so that isnt changing much but if the learning changes or a certain role needs a little focus change so I can relate experience. I've been OOW since 11/2025

like

If you ARE doing this what is the naming convention you use? As you don’t want to give it away to the company you’ve altered it, but also when asked about your experience it’s needs to be consistent, no?

like

Your answers about experience shouldn’t change based on versions of your resume. You tailor resumes to jobs to hit key words, emphasize to aspects of your work most relevant to the job, or to frame your experience and accomplishments in a light most relevant to the needs of the position.

If you’re answering questions about experience, you similarly might want to highlight things in a way that are most aligned with the position, but you shouldn’t be making things up on your resume or your interviews.

YES

Yeahhh this part of job hunting is honestly the most draining. I used to spend 40 mins tweaking bullets for one posting, then get the same auto-reject 2 hours later and feel kinda stupid for even doing it.

What helped me was stopping the full rewrite for every app and just making 1 core resume, then changing only the top 4-6 keywords + a couple bullets based on the JD. If the role is a close match, I only tailor the summary and the most relevant project/impact line, not the whole thing.

Also worth checking whether the issue is actually keyword match vs ATS formatting. I had one resume that looked fine to me but a 2-column section was getting parsed weird, so it was basically invisible in the system. I’ve been using ResumeJudge lately to sanity-check the match before I waste time on a full rewrite. Do you know if your resume is getting dropped right after submit, or are you at least making it past the first screen?

Men, how do you make yourself feel sexy and successful?

I feel like, I've dependend on my partners to validate me in those ways. But that makes me insecure & dependent on them. They loved me but idk if they "wanted/desired" me.

To feel sexy, I'm working on losing weight and then building muscle, but that'll take time and fade away with age anyway.

To feel successful, I mean... I have an OK career and savings, but I just don't identify either as success.

Maybe, I just want to feel desired.
