Well, you don't only work on credit studies. You work on R&D as a whole package. That said, with 174 rules and the craziness within tax planning and deep dive studies to avoid 174 capitalization, right now is not the best time to join an R&D group if you want time on your hands. I expect this to be the case for at least another year or so. If you want time, don't go big 4. The pay is worse than mid size, the hours are worse, the benefits are worse, the only plus side is if you want to go into industry at a client one day or want to make partner at big 4.
Good luck, hope this helps!
In my experience, the pay, benefits, and hours are better at Big4. Teammates are better too. I came from regional and midsize.
Only way to get better pay in R&D is to leave public accounting and work for a niche advisory firm or "consulting" firm.
I work in R&D. Our hours aren't bad, routinely hover around 30-40 CSH between January and March. Anywhere between 45-55 April - October. November and December were busy this year because of 174. The work is boring and gets you pigeonholed but the WLB and comp is better than compliance.

I’m in R&D and it’s incredibly boring. The hours are great because there’s rarely work, one busy season but monthly/ seasonal filing deadlines.

What R&D practice are you in? What is your rank?
I am in R&D and the work is interesting, albeit repetitive. But at EY, you do more than just R&D since its part of a larger group
Coach
EY R&D is part of a larger quantitative services group that includes method changes, transaction costs analysis, unicap, fixed assets, and other studies.
I agree R&D can get repetitive, but if you do other things as well as R&D it can keep a good balance of work
R&D is 30-40hrsbubs
Which firm?
The Crowe r&d team is hiring and follows a lot of the comments here relative to mid size v b4. Good hours, interesting work, and competitive pay.
My best friend works in the R&D (credits) group at one of these firms and I couldn't tell you one good thing I've heard over the past 9 years of our friendship. I suppose technically there are no busy seasons if you work busy season hours since 2020 with no break lol
10 years of being in an R&D practice. As others have said, lots of other work comes in the door so you have you repetitive and not so repetitive. Great team and 1 busy season for me at my current firm.

Summers are busy
Winters as well
I did one R&D busy season as a staff and it was my least favorite. I was slammed from mid July through
mid September. I found the work to be a little dry but honestly depends what projects you get on as some of what you learn can be quite interesting.
