Does anyone have legal secretaries who make careless mistakes? Some of them cannot even put a correct caption on a document. I feel that really just don’t care and want to collect a paycheck.

Seconding A1 here. Market-dependent, obviously, but assistants at Plaintiff firms in my area top out around $50k. Assistants at defense/corporate law firms start at $50-$55k and top out around $80-$90k. If your firm is paying your secretary $45k and you're giving out non-stop assignments, then yeah they probably don't care since they know you make up to 5x more than them.

Not trying to defend what you are saying, but when you have a heavy case load and very little pay, you sorta get what you pay for. However, I understand what you are saying. Fresh out of school I find that they make mistakes because they don’t have guidance or they are overwhelmed with the field as a whole. Honestly, I am paid 55k a year and my firm thinks that’s “fair” however, if we are being really honest for the area I live and work, starting salary for my position is 65k. But because I’m loyal to my Attorney I won’t leave. I think it’s fair to say the younger ones need their hands held and if you want a well experienced and qualified assistant you have to offer them what they are worth.

Yes. They’re incompetent which is why they are paid low salaries. If you pay more you can find better staff.

Oh cmon, how bad of mistakes can they be if they get the docket number right?

In a case I’m working on right now a party’s name has been spelled wrong in the caption for over two years. Her attorney’s filings routinely interchange the right and wrong spelling. They’ll get it wrong in the caption, right in the title of the motion, and wrong in the signature block.

We are sadly in an are where it is increasingly difficult to find competent assistants. Lately I keep finding people who are demanding high pay with zero experience or skill and are struggling to follow simple instructions expected of a college graduate without constant supervision. Unless you keep a close eye nothing gets done or simply task takes the whole day,

“Era”

My best assistant was a high school grad w decades of experience. She was paid 85k.

My worst one is one with two college degrees who will only do things for partners.

We have one of those at my firm and it drives me insane. I will say I don't think shes stupid or doesn't care, I just don't think she has great attention to detail. I can tell that she really is trying but yet she is still making silly mistakes.

Did a first interview with hr rep, went very well. she set up the hiring manager meeting for a few days later. Met with the manager. Another great conversation, went over time and was told I’d hear back about panel set up. Following day I get a request from hr rep to “continue the conversation” with manager. This is set up Tuesday.
Why do you think the manager wants to meet again? Good? Bad? I felt great about the interview when we ended.

Heyy people,

Couldn't attend this interview at PwC due to last minute technical difficulties. I requested HR to reschedule it. She said it's not possible this week and she'll try her best for the next week. I am really tensed, I don't want to throw away this opportunity. I was really looking forward for the interview. Would they really reschedule my interview?

Networking question here. A retired partner at the firm I used to work out reached out to me recently about attending an afternoon during the week (b4 4/30) with one of his long time clients. The partner and I have kept in touch since I joined my new firm and I feel like his invitation is a great networking opportunity since the client (who I have worked with before) is on a number of boards. Torn as how to request off as an S3. Could materialize to nothing but could be good for reconnecting.

Hello All,
I am finishing up my second year of practice as a lawyer. I transitioned to plaintiffs pi work from a boutique commercial litigation firm. I like the work and not having to bill. The issue I am having is managing volume. I have about 150 active files some pre-lit and the rest are in litigation. Cases range in value from very small to low six figures. I also take the driver seat for the grunt work on the firms bigger cases which are at or near 7 figure value. I constantly feel (cont.)

Any insight is appreciated, thank you!!

I currently work at a small PI firm in Atlanta were EVERYTHING is settled presuit. If we’re unable to settle, then it’s referred to another firm for litigation. This whole process seems very atypical to me and the attorneys rarely touch a file until the first liability offer is received. The paralegals handle everything from intake to drafting the demands. The attorney briefly skims (does NOT read) the demand packages and signs. Is this ethical?? Anyone else work at a firm that is run this way??
